Title: Trouble shifting
Post by PBLover on 11/07/09 at 19:46:11

I posted a while ago when I first got my 2006 S40, but haven't since.  I'm having a problem with shifting down into neutral and first gears when coming to a stop.  Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this something others have had?  I've tried shifting down through the gears using the engine to slow the bike and also putting in the clutch, stopping, then shifting it down into first to take off again.  Both ways the bike doesn't like to shift down.  This is not an every stop problem, but seems to do it intermittently during a ride.  I can usually get it shifted after stopping by rolling the bike backwards a couple inches or by pulling the clutch lever in and out a few times while working the foot lever.  Does this sound like an adjustment issue or something else to you guys?  I'm not very mechanically inclined, but am willing to tackle it if it's some sort of adjustment I can do at home.  Any ideas or suggestions welcomed  :)

Practice,.. practice,...

It's just getting the feel for things,....  sounds normal mechanically...

It might be an adjustment issue.
When I put an engine from a wrecked bike in my '88, it was hard to shift up.  Repositioned the arm on the lever and it was better.  One more spline and it was perfect.
mark the arm and shaft before you try anything.  Move the arm in the opposite direction of shifting down.

How much slack in the clutch lever? Do you "goose" the throttle a bit when you pull the clutch in? Have you tried just slapping the throttle closed & stepping on the shifter at the same time, then picking up on it just enough to not accelerate, but stop using the engine as a brake, slapping it closed & stepping on the shifter again?

That is most likely why he's having trouble, braun where finesse is needed.  Bent dogs don't shift.

I have no idea how much force I am subjecting the shifter to. I am not trying to bend anything, but I am quick & decisive & when I decide its time to shift, Im not kidding around. Thats USUALLY,, sometimes it may take 2 seconds to get a shift, because Im just Ho Hummin' along. I almost never have a shifting problem. Sometimes it will jump out of 2nd a sec or 2 after I made the shift, but Im pretty sure thats my fault.
Diddle with the adjustment, but yea, mark it first. Check the slack in the clutch lever. Cant hurt to have a look at that. channge the way you work the gas a bit, mess around & look for a way to make it work out. Then tell it here, maybe that would be a good clue & someone could tell you how to make it work better.

No play in the clutch lever, all good there.  As far as getting used to it, I have no problems shifting anything else including a Triumph Legend 900cc and 2 old yamaha RD400's. They all shift smoothly.  Only the S40 is a problem.  I've tried standing on the shift lever....no luck.  I will try adjusting the clutch lever this afternoon to see if it makes a difference.

Check the pivot point for your shift lever. A little binding there can make it shift hard. I have to take mine apart & lube it occasionally or the crud makes it stick. While you're down there, lube your brake pedal pivot points too.

Nope, thats not good. Not good at all. Adjust for at least 1/8th inch free play. By free play, I mean you push the lever out with your fingers & its so easy to move you could push it back toward the grip with your nose.

Doesn't everyone use their nose when adjusting the free play in the clutch.

No, Ive talked about free play twice. Then he responds with " Its all good, There is none". I could only conclude that he didnt understand, so, since I didnt wwant to be unclear, I made it unavoidably clear. There is no "Tone & inflection" in the typed word, so you cant kbnow how I said it. Youre just trying to make me out a jackass..

And for the humorless on here, I shift by ear all the time because the Savage doesn't have a Tachometer! 8-)

Ok, checked out the bike, it's got just a little play in the lever now after adjusting a bit, then went for a long ride since it's 60 degrees out and no rain today for a change.  Had a good time, thought about the whole situation while riding, trying to figure out what either me or the bike is doing wrong and came to a conclusion.  I think it's my new riding boots causing the problem.  They fit a bit bigger than the shoes I was used to riding in and I don't think I've been taking my foot off the shift lever completely or letting it completely back up between shifts.  I started removing my foot off to the side between shifts, especially while shifting down and the problem "seems" to be aleviated for the most part.  I still had a couple times when it didn't want to shift down to first, but it was going a bit better.  Starting to think it's just the rider and not the bike......  time will tell.  By the way.....I'm a she, not a he  ;D

Never even considered the foot on the lever. That'll do it, allright.
Yea, ya gotta have some free play in the lever, always./ If the cable never get slack in it, then theres a little pressure Not getting to the clutch pack.

PB Lover, I didnt know if that was Peanut Butter or Lead. I thot maybe you liked bullets. Maybe some great target shooter.

Actually 'PB' stand for Pink Barracuda.  My other toy is a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Gran Coup 440, which I'm working on selling due to so little use.  It's just sitting in the garage trying to figure out how to start rusting....

It was a nasty, cold day & this gal I worked with had a Z-28( her hubby did & she drove it). I "Offered" to go get it & bring it up to the front door so she wouldnt have to walk to it. I wasnt even trying to do more than kill it. I just wanted to drive it up to the stop sign & around the corner to the door of the store. I backed out nice & easy,,, stuck it in first & it was stumbling ( cold as hell that day), so I tickled it a bit & eased out on the clutch.. then i was sitting sideways in the road,,cranked the wheel & it spun straight up to the stop sign..Wadda GAS!!! & she was Hooooot,, & he was one Baaad MOFO. 3 guys decided to whip him, one had a tire iron,, they all 3 got some of that tire iron before they got an ambulance ride..He boxed me one night, I had the 8Oz gloves, he had the 16s & I still couldnt touch him or keep him off me..Yep,, he was hard to handle..& she was easy on the eyes..
