Title: Almost got a ticket (formally Finally)
Post by Yonuh Adisi on 11/06/09 at 14:48:29

Finally able to order the cam kit for my van today, so I should be able to put it back together soon. Cutting it close too, winter is almost here and soon I won't be able to ride the FireLizard back and forth to work because of the weather. I work 12 hour shifts 1700 to 0500 and it gets cccooollllldddddd in the mornings having to ride 25 miles home after work.

What kinda cam you get for it? I installed a high torque cam in my van & improved MPG & performance.. why they dont put them in pickups & vans from the factory, IDK,, kinda silly IMO.

Got the rest of the gaskets I needed. Now I can start putting my van back together, once I get the time. Every time I think I have the time to do it something else happens that requires my attention. Yesterday it was my daughter's room needing some repair attention, and today the drain for the washing machine broke so I had to repair it. Maybe tomorrow I will actually be able to work on the van.

I guess I won't bother doing anymore updates on my van since someone is complaining about non-motorcycle posts.

WTF, I am BARELY here any more because of this nuts.  crappity smacking censorship on a friendly forum.  We aren't 12.  And if you dare try sticking me in a corner I'll crappity smack you up so bad you wish your parents never met.   :)

BTW, not that anyone cares, but I'll lay it out like this.  I am completely unable to censor myself.  So, if ya ever have a problem with my posts, don't bother emailing me or whining, just ban me.  Cuz I say what I want to say..and that's it.

Yonuh, good luck with the van.  I had no idea it got cold in New Mexico.  We just closed our pool last week..during the first snowfall.  Seems life just rolls by so fast, sometimes it is hard to keep up.  Peace, bro.

I decided what the he11, if folks don't like it they ain't got to read it. So here is another van update:

Been cleaning up my parts before I put the engine back together. Now that is rather a chore. Got the heads, oil pan, valve covers, and timing cover cleaned but ran out of light before I could finish cleaning the intake. Used compressed air to blow out the passages of everything and meticulously cleaned all the mating surfaces. Tomorrow I'll finish up cleaning the intake then attack cleaning the block.

Then once all the parts are clean, I will be putting the engine back together.

becarefull with the gaskets.
brother got some that were multi fit.
didn't read the directions that came with them and heads overheated.
cause he didn't open up the cooling ports enough.

Title: Re: Finally
Post by Yonuh Adisi on 12/16/09 at 16:35:29

I'll definitely read the directions and double and triple check the fit before I place the heads. Thanks for the tip.

I'm waiting patiently for the day I can reply to this thread...

"'BOUT TIME!"... ;D ;D ;D

Good luck,... You'll get there, ... just be ready for it... it's coming... ;)

Luckily,... all I have to do is wait,... you're stuck with all the work...
Wish I could lend a hand...

Good luck and work with the van.

There are several post on this page alone that are not motorcycle related so who give a full cup of .........

Post by Yonuh Adisi on 12/17/09 at 16:03:59

Dang it, I ran out of light again. At least I managed to finish cleaning the intake and got block mating surfaces clean as well. Would have had more time but had to go to older daughter's house to put plastic over her windows.

I am so close to having that van engine done I can almost taste it.

Got the heads on and all torqued down. Taking a small break before I install the new cam and everything else.

Verslagen: I double and triple checked the head gaskets as you suggested and they were perfect. Thanks again for the tip.

Post by Yonuh Adisi on 12/20/09 at 16:25:58

Out of all the parts cleaning I did, I went and forgot to clean the oil pan mating surface. I am out of light to take care of it now, but tomorrow I will attack it. Got the majority of everything else taken care of though.

It won't be long now before she is ready to test fire.

Title: Re: Finally

Well, I got the engine put back together now. All that's left is attach exhaust manifolds to the pipes, connect the alternator, and then fluids. Just in time too, it snowed last night and the day before it was sleeting.

Will have to finish up when the snow melts and I get the fluids.

How much melted snow does it call for? What kinda engine IS that?

Title: Re: Finally
Post by Yonuh Adisi on 03/30/10 at 15:35:54

Had to find this thread again, didn't want to start another one just so I could ask this question.

Got the van where I can start it finally, but only by priming the carb. Once fuel in carb runs out it dies. Obviously a fuel delivery problem. My question is, can I install an electric fuel pump on a carburated engine without having to do a sh!t load of extra work for it to function? What I mean is, can I by pass the mechanical pump and just put in an in-line electric fuel pump?

Title: Re: Finally
Post by RidgeRunner13 on 03/30/10 at 17:21:25

It's cheaper & easier to replace the mechanical pump, even on a van.

Title: Re: Finally
Post by Yonuh Adisi on 03/30/10 at 17:25:09

Well, I have an in-line electrical fuel pump on hand that I know works. That's why I asked. Anyway, I contacted a buddy of mine and he gave me the answer I needed and also suggested that it could be as simple as a clogged up fuel line. So I'm gonna try that first.

Yanuh, make sure all your vacuum lines are all conected to the carb.
well not all of them ,just the ones that are supposed to be.

Good idea. I will check that out as well when I work on it some more tomorrow.

Got the fuel delivery problem sorted out. Just needed to run the engine enough for the fuel pump to pick up and force fuel all the way from the tank to the carb. (remember this is a full size conversion van so the distance is relatively far.)

I took a page out of my bike repair book and filled the carb bowl itself instead of just pouring fuel down the carb mouth. It ran the engine long enough to bring the fuel.

So just a few more miner things and she will be good to go.

Man, I dont unnerstand how wadding paper up & filling the bowl could possibly help, but, if it worked for ya, thats great!

Title: Re: Finally
Post by Yonuh Adisi on 04/07/10 at 11:25:50

The van is now 100% mechanical wise. Just need insurance and registered and we can give my older daughter her escort back.

Oh and JOG? Yeah, I crumpled it up, shoved it into the bowl and fire it right up. LOL

What I did was take the fuel line loose from the in-line fuel filter and poured gas through the line till it filled the bowl. That let it run long enough for the pump to get the gas to the carb from the tank.

Post by RidgeRunner13 on 04/07/10 at 12:21:39

For future reference there is a vent tube sticking up in the throat area of the carb that you can use to fill the float bowl with a squirt bottle. That way you don't have to take any thing loose. Works well when one has been setting too long.
I use an old quart gear lube bottle with the nozzle tip. 8-)

Didn't want to start a new thread so I pulled this one up out of limbo.

Well, I've been running the van for a while now but three days ago I dang near got a ticket because of emission problems, so now I got to use my tax return (which I hope gets here soon) to rebuild the engine. I was needing to do that anyway because of it being a mosquito killer but I didn't have the finances to correct it.

Gonna completely rebuild it, not just rings, but a complete master kit, the only thing that's gonna be re-used is the crank, rods, and cam which is still pretty new. Even going to replace the intake.

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 03/20/11 at 05:06:50

Id never rebuild a grocery getter. I would either stuff a used engine in it, or get a rebuilt engine. The cost of rebuilding myself, coupled with the potential for disaster, adding all the time & hassle to the job,, heck, so much easier  to just swap  engines out. & its cheaper,

Title: Re: Almost got a ticket (formally Finally)
Post by runwyrlph on 03/20/11 at 06:15:18

yeah, but if you have the know-how, ability and time -  rebuilds gonna be (if you do it right) more reliable than a used engine with who-knows-what kind of damage and hidden issues.  also got to be cheaper for a rebuild (excluding your labor costs) isn't it?

Title: Re: Almost got a ticket (formally Finally)
Post by Yonuh Adisi FSO on 03/20/11 at 10:28:17

Most used engines around here run as much as a rebuilt engine which around here are going for a thousand dollars or more. I can rebuild my current engine for far less money and since I am doing it myself I ain't gotta pay a shop's outrageous prices.

And since I am out of work at the moment anyhow, I got the time to do it.

All that adds up to You need to do the job yourself. I wish ya th best,, keep it clan, NM is a blasted dust bowl,, innitt
