Title: 1997 Savage Died on way to work now won't turn ove
Post by HappyHighwayman on 10/28/09 at 18:54:17

A couple of weeks ago, my bike died about a mile from my house. I figured it was a fuel issue as I had accidentally left the fuel pump in "reserve" and then left town for a week. When I got back I filled up ASAP but the bike's carbs got clogged. I had it towed and I brought it in for a tuneup which it needed anyway.

Fast forward to last night. I rode it to a friend's place and was there for maybe 20 minutes. When I got out, the bike had issues starting and I had to give it a little gas for it to catch.

This morning it started on the first touch...I think at this point I didn't let it warm up sufficiently, and boom it died 1 mile from my house. I left it parked all day but after work couldn't get it started. It goes rrrr rrrr rrrr but won't catch.

(Tried choke in, out, half way etc).

I should note I am very new to motorcycling and have no maintenance experience...other than taking the seat off, and some minor things I won't know how to do most of what you'll suggest :(

Oh, and it's not out of gas, I just filled it up 2 days ago, and have only driven a few miles.

Sounds like your vent tubes are clogged.

Reserve works like On, so not an issue
BTW, reserve is forward and prime is backward, are you sure you were forward?
Not really an issue as you got a "tune up" after anyway.  A prime on for 2 weeks would be resolved by that.

So it died after a mile, did you try prime?
If it runs in prime then it's a gravity pump problem.
If so, then replace the vacuume line between the carb and the gravity pump.

Ok so this morning I pushed the bike home...wow, don't want to do that ever again any time soon. The battery was dead so I charged her up with the trickle charger, and she started on the first try. I let her warm up for 5+ minutes, but then she just dies. I can get it to restart, but then after a few minutes of idling it just shuts off.

Does this sound like any particular problem?>

Also, how long can I run the fuel pump on "prime" before it will flood the tank or just be bad for the bike? I mean, I can get it to start in Reserve/On but it needed me to give it a little gas while pressing the starter which I know shouldn't be the case for a motorcycle.

After pushing the bike home, I charged the battery with a trickle charger and it started right up. Is it a good idea to regularly top up your battery?

In any event, it would only run for about 5 min before dying. I waited a week because I was busy with work and today it started again and I sat on it for a good 10 min to see if it would die. Eventually the RPMs revved to a nice idle and it just idled away with the choke off.

I might ride it around the block a few times.
