Title: strange noises
Post by BurnPgh on 10/25/09 at 16:56:37

When engine braking Im sometimes getting a terrible racket. It only happens when engine braking (but not every time)and sounds kind of like extremely loose valves or a slapping chain. The sound is related to engine rpm. Im sure its not my cam chain as i just replaced it and both guides about 150mi ago. Im letting the bike cool as i type this to have at the valves but it seems if it were the valves that the noise would be consistent but when accelerating or at a steady pace everything sounds normal. Any other suggestions as to what the issue may be?

You might want to pull your drive sprocket cover and check that the nut is not loose. I have read on here that some of them have worked loose. DO NOT mix up the bolts when you remove the cover as they are different lenghts. Aslo don't lose the rubber washers on the bolts.

solved. All three bolts/nuts for the top mount had loosened enough to allow the mount plates to rattle. Why it only did so with engine braking and then only sometimes i dont know.
