Title: First Mod - ok not really a mod
Post by nicholas on 10/22/09 at 14:06:05

Hi Everyone
So I have had my 96 for a few weeks now, loving it. I just replaced the spark plug - took me all of 2 mins - so easy. I did not have to take the gas tank off....:) I love it already.
Anyway, I put in a NGK Iridium <DPR8EIX-9> - This has made a huge! difference in the way my bike starts/idle's/performs....... The plug I pulled was copper and I have no idea how old it was, it was a little black but seemed ok, it was not fouled or anything.

Overall great investment - $10 per plug and I understand they last much longer then conventional plugs...... so win win in my eyes.
Two Thumbs up 4 sure !

did you get a savage where the "spark plug door" mod was done ?
i'm glad you posted. i was planning on trying one of these plugs and you saved me the time of doing a search by posting the part #.
thanks and good luck with your machine

Just brought the same type plug  :)

However i shall be taking the tank off to do the same  ::)

Did you set the gap as standard ?

DO NOT  set a gap for Iridium - they come pre gapped - you can very easily damage the tip - just install - its great

It's a minor modification so that you don't have to take the tank off to get to the spark plug...see the link

I dont have the mod - and I did not have to take the tank off ?
The seller gave me this spark plug tool that came with the bike.
It is very basic but did the job....:)

I wanna know then how you did it. I cannot figure out how to change the plug without removing the tank. Please tell me how you did it. :)

As far as i am aware having ridden bikes for over 30 years now, all spark plugs come pre gapped from manufacturers though it never hurts to check.

Im not sure of the gap on this type of plug however against standard as i havent checked as yet.

Unless your bike had the covers removed by the PO....this inquiring mind wants to know, also :-?

Well - currently I am at home fighting a cold - but when I feel better I will take a picture of the small spark plug tool that the previous owner gave me , and I will take a picture of the spark plug area as well, as far as I can tell nothing was done- the bike is stock.
When he gave me the tool he said "this is to remove the spark plug without taking off the tank", it is a little tight but I did it in under 2mins. And I don't have small hands, by any means.
Later
Nik

Maybe the dirt on the streets where you live isnt so gritty as here. Maybe yours just doesnt get "Down there", like it does here. I always blow compressed air around the plug before I pull it. Once, I didnt & once, I found some nasty crap right by the hole, so I put grease on a bamboo skewer & felt around down inside the engine. I pulled out a couple of chunks that fell in. NOW I always blow it out, before I pull that plug,

Where can this spark-plug be found? I went to O'rielly's and they didn't have it. Gonna check other parts house tomorrow.

id love to see this tool. Even with the stock tool and no chrome head covers the seat and tank have to be removed for me to get at the plug. I dont need to remove them but i might aswell. I still have to loosen everything.

ok, so there is no chrome cover on the left side of the engine.....my bad guys - sorry to get your hopes up.

But I did not have to take the tank off....:) - if you google spark plug tool - there are tons of images of it...... just 2 pieces - one for the spark plug and another to turn it.

cheers

cutting the stock tool from the Suzuki kit makes it a lot easier to get the plug in and out.

If they do not stock it they should be able to order one for you.  Auto parts stores are usually cheaper than a bike shop.
