Post by jack8823 on 10/18/09 at 07:55:19

Hello guys. I have tapping in top end of engine. What's that? Need adjusting valves?

How many miles do you have on that bike?  Answer changes according to mileage -- yours sounds pretty bad.

I have about 18000 miles.

Adjust your valves
But, check your cam chain adjuster for extension.
When running, feel the clutch cover right above the oil filter for tapping.
Are you having any other problems?
poor accel?
quit on you on the freeway?
The knocking could be a burnt piston too.

Step 1 adjust valves.

While it is down adjusting valves, pull left side cover and check cam chain tensioner extension.

You will learn enough in that one internal excursion to define a lot of what your issue is (or was, if you were lucky)

AT 18,000 miles you are way up in the cam chain danger zone so don't delay the side cover check (valve adjust can be a part of that routine if you do it that way)

have been away from this forum for some time now (got a honda 750 shadow last november) had what seems like the same problem you are having with my savage. took it to a friend he pulled the spark plug put seafoam in the cylinder and let it sit overnight. the next day he cranked it and filled his garage with smoke. problem was i had a carbon buildup on top of the piston causing the noise. (he said it was caused from using gas with too high an octaine)
gave the bike to my son he's been riding it almost a year now and the noise is gone.
worth a try don't ya think!

God bless...greyhead51

Sea Foam works good on engines and carbs
