Title: Loose, missing nuts & bolts
Post by mumbles on 10/12/09 at 07:02:13

Since getting the Savage 2 weeks ago we have been finding a few bolts missing.
The header was only held by one bolt.
The front seat was missing the 2 bolts that hold it in place.
The turn signal screws were loose. Mirrors were also loose.
Left side footpeg bolt missing.
Also right side cover and tool box missing.

The lady we bought the Savage from said that her 17 year old son had been riding the bike back and forth to school. Does the bike tend to loose these parts or could it have been carelessness?

Been applying loctite to every bolt thats been replaced.

Sounds like not much care was taken of the bike. People can take things apart for weekend projects, and not take much care putting things back in order.

Mine was much like this. I spent about 3 weekends going over it bolt by bolt, and screw by screw...WELL worth the time I put it.

After finding the first few missing things, I got VERY nervous taking it out on the road.

When someone puts that little of care in, safety takes a backseat...not a great recipe when only about 10-15 square inches of rubber is making contact with the road :)

Yeah we been doing the same thing you did also (little by little). Going through it for maintenance and just checking things out.

Searching on this forum sure helps out alot. Thanks alot guys.

Sounds like a good opportunity to get that stainless allen-head bolt set off Ebay.  It costs $35.  The seller is stainless-cycle or something like that.

Also, a developing rule of thumb for the Savage:  "That which is not given anti-seize should be threadlocked."

Don't forget to apply locktite to the helmet lock thingy, mine fell off.

Pull a magnet on a string & put it all back together when you get to the destination?

Hahaha, it's already missing. I figured thats what went on the r/side by the fender.

For an El Cheapo helmet lock, get a Gun padlock with the long, flexible, rubber coated "Hook". I have one that will let me hang the helmet on the front & it wont be upside down, just waiting on some jasshonkey to pee in.

Only two bolts/nuts I have had a problem keeping tight are the header bolts. EVERY other nut/bolt/screw on this bike puts up a fight to get it off.  :-/

The more I think about it I believe the kid that owned the bike previously tried to maintain it himself and just fell a little short when it came to puting things back together.

No joke. People recommend anti-seize on those, but they seem to need threadlock.  I'd apply some if I knew how the threadlock would react to the heat.
