Title: bed liner as paint?
Post by JohnBoy on 10/07/09 at 20:00:24

Have any of you painted, or seen bikes painted, with truck bed liner?
I know that it comes in different colors, and that it is almost bulletproof. The right texture and color might even look like my blue jeans.

I picked up a can of Rustoleum bed liner for about 8 bucks.  I'll use it to paint the aluminum skid plate on my dirt bike.  If the surface prep is done right, I think it will be pretty durable.. will try to remember to post results after plowing it through the sticks and stuff.

I have seen a bike painted with bed liner and it looks pretty good. The frame, tank, and fenders were done in flat black.

Several years ago a guy across the street from me restored an old Sportster. He used bed liner for the frame and powdercoated everything else in complimentary earthtone colors, not camo ;), looked awesome.

The Buell Blast had it's "sheet metal" done in Surlyn -- that's the stuff covering golf balls.  Tough material, and the color goes all the way through.  Minor scratches just polish out.  I bet the bed liner is similar, though not as thick.

I painted mine with black liner paint. I loved the look and it is indestructible. Also an attention getter. Everyone just HAS to touch it. Good thing fingerprints don't show.

clueless - pics?

My truck has Line-X bedliner.  Absolutely love it!
I also saw a truck completely covered with something similar once at an auction.  Everyone was touching it too.  Can't remember if it sold, but it did attract attention.

I work for a truck equipment company (utility trucks/cranes/dumps/flatbeds, etc.).  If a customer wants their utility truck coated, we contract it to Line-X too.

If someone just wants to do this, would it be cheaper & would it look as" good" if they used the spray cans of undercoat that a bodyshop would use?

I used the Plasti-kote bedliner paint for the inside of my rear fender and a plate I made for under the seat. Seems to work good. Not too rough textured.

Justin,

I used the Plasti Kote spray cans. Hung the tank, fenders, etc in the trees while painting. Easy stuff to use and is tough. I'll try to find pics.

I saw a almost brand new Dodge pick-up (big thing) on I-78 in NJ that looked professionally done.   It was a double take moment....   Not too bad looking.....

Very nice! Just what I was thinking of ...only red.
Did you paint it?
What brand of paint?
how durable is it...any soft spots or problems?

Thank you for sharing
JohnBoy

I have been thinking of doing it as well; the Dupli-color version.  I got a bunch of it for the truck bed and after a little of test spraying decided that I areally like it.   It sure beats regular paint for durability.

JohnBoy clueless painted it back when it was his bike he said what he used bake on the first page. There are no soft spots or scratches, but I have scratched my helmet on it when I hung it from my handle bar. This stuff is great I just throw my keys on the tank they stay, no paint to scratch and gasoline doesn't phase it either.  :)

Whoa!  Biddie's paint job does look good!  I like it.. crinkle paint plus super durability in a can.  That paint job blows my skid plate idea out of the water (I decided not to make a skid plate into a grip-plate after all).   Good job, clueless-FSO  8-)

According to the Duplicolor website, they think like Henry Ford did ... you can get it in any color you want as long as it is black.

well, that lets out lettering over the tank paint. Rats!

Can't remember the brand name I used. It also came in red and white. I did  prep everything pretty well before I sprayed 'em. I don't have a garage and did it outside. Like I said before, everyone just has to touch it ;D
I sure do miss the ease of maintenance and repair on the Savage. But I sure am enjoying the Silverado ride!

Yeah but you could emboss lettering or your own graphic design in the liner.  I have no idea how to do it, but it would be awesome.  Maybe put on a good thick coat, wait till half-dry, and stamp it with a design you've carved into a potato?  :D  Just thinking out loud.

I wont be touching it, I'd be backing up to it and scratching my back on it. :D
Cool.
