Title: No Spark
Post by Nerfherder on 10/06/09 at 15:09:43

Hey Everyone.  Im new here and a new owner of a 1995 Savage 650 with 6.5k miles on it. It is in great condition other than the fact it wont start now.  I rode it one day, went to start it the next and no luck.  The engine turns over what the start button is pressed.  Here is a list of everything I have done this far:
-Kill switch is in the proper position.
-Clutch lever was pulled in.
-Key was on.
-Pulled the spark plug.  Grounded it to the frame, no spark.
-Checked compression, is great.
-Tested the plug in a different bike, sparks fine and strong.
-Pulled the coil off and checked the voltage at the hot lead.  It was 11.4v when the bike was on.
-Checked resistance across the coil.  Came out to 4 ohms (seems a bit high to me).

I don't have any way to check the CDI but unless something is wrong with the ground portion of the CDI it doesn't seem like the CDi is the issue.  I am thinking the coil went out as the bike was running really rich and a weak coil would cause that wouldn't it?

Anyways I am stumped.  I hope it is an easy fix and not a coil as they are kind of pricey from what I have seen.  Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

I believe there are 3 safety switches that must be met

1 - Kill Switch (check)
2 - Clutch Lever (check)
3 - Neutral (unknown)

If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction.

Ah I forgot to mention, had it in neutral and the neutral light comes on.

There is also a kickstand switch, but it usually only affect it if you put it down while the bike is in gear. Just as a test, you might try lifting the kickstand too.

I usually start mine with
1. switch on
2. clutch pulled in
3. in neutral
4. sitting on it with the kickstand up

Started it many times with the stand down and in neutral, but tried it with the stand up when I was testing everything else as well.  Nothing.  The engine cranks great just missing spark.  Tried a new plug as well.  Nothing.

I haven't been much further than that to try and diagnose an electrical issue with this bike, so someone else might be of more assistance.

But, on my snowmobiles I have had where the plug wire attaches to the plug cap come loose before causing it not to start. Could it be something along those lines?

Nah I have checked all the connections and anything as I have had that same problem on snowmachines as well.

Anyone else able to chime in and help a fellow rider?

I'm plum out of easy fixes today  :D

Engine won't crank if the safeties were the issue.

We had a problem like just a few days ago.  Turned out to be the connector on the CDI being corroded.

Question for everyone... If the low side of the coil is shorted to ground, will it spark?

If so, then easy way to check coil.

I checked out the connectors on the CDI.  They looked pretty clean.  Im totally stumped.

Did you get her started?  Got enough gasoline?

Half a tank of gas, havent got her started.  Still no spark.  Also as far as I understand, the low side is a switched ground through the CDI.  It also grounds out through the frame.

D diode

D Diode? What is that and where is it located?

I don't think it's the side stand diode (only exposed diode that I know of)
Neutral light works and starter turns over.
If either circuit of this diode is burnt out, one or the other or both won't work.

I don't know the bike very well yet, but after all you checked, sounds like you're looking at a hi voltage problem, and you know what that means ! Yes, it starts w/ a "c"   :(

low battery?  Try a push start with starter assisting.

What is the actual voltage, unloaded and then during cranking?

Actual voltage with it cranking was 11.4v constant.  Battery was fully charged, checked that with a multimeter.  Also threw it on the charger just in case.  Not a battery issue.

Check V on the coil.

According to my Clymer's manual, resistance of the primary side of the coil should be from 1 to 7 ohms. Resistance of the secondary side should be 10,000 to 25,000 ohms. "If the coil does not meet (or come close to) either of these specifications, the coil must be replaced." Measurement of the secondary side is made from the spark plug wire to either of the primary terminals. Clymer's also says the coil must be warm (minimum 68 degrees F.) for an accurate measurement.

I see your original plug sparked OK on another bike but I would replace it anyway.

well on the secondary side I get an OL on the multimeter.  Seems to me I have a bad secondary coil then?  Means a new coil is in order then, no?

You get the same reading as if the Ohm meter leads were just laying on a table? If so, then its Open, & yes, youve found the problem,,
