Title: Bike Won't Start at All. Possible causes?
Post by seb481 on 10/04/09 at 14:53:56

Hi guys. All the sudden my bike doesn't start. I'm in neutral, ignition on,  but nothing at all comes out. Not even a struggling engine, nothing.

What do you think it is? Battery? I'm not sure since the lights and horn seem to work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You only been here a couple of months so...

Neutral... check
ig on... check
clutch pulled in ?

Do lights dim when you try to start?

Does it click when you push the button?

I confirm that:
Neutral... check
ig on... check
clutch pulled in

Lights don't dim when I try to start.

No click at all when I push the button. The bike is completely silent.

Ig circuit is powered by the same fuse as lights so can't be that.

Check the start button first and work you way to the starter.

you got a volt meter?

You got Clymers?

also sometimes the starter relay sticks (usually on) take a plastic handled screwdriver and rap on the frame next to the ig switch.  the starter relay is right behind.

Something strange happened... I just read your last reply and I didn't really understand what you said by "also sometimes the starter relay sticks (usually on) take a plastic handled screwdriver and rap on the frame next to the ig switch.  the starter relay is right behind."

Note that I am French and with no mechanic skill or knowledge whatsoever. I took a screwdriver, went to the bike, and didn't know what to do with the screwdriver. I just removed a dead bug that was stuck close the switch.

I also turn the switch on and off several times.

Then I tried to start the bike and it started perfectly, as it usually does.

Very strange. I'm sure the bug thing had nothing to do with this.

At any rates, it's working again.

Thank you very much for your help :)

Check for 12V at the coil.

What should be on the coil? 12 v? IDK just how the coil/ig circuit works, but thats what Burn needs to find out about, IMO.

Ah, the old dead bug by the kill switch trick.   ;D

most likely operating the switch removed a bit of corossion

So you're french, cool work with a frenchman so I can read your posts with a french accent.  Sorry if you sound like peppy lepew.

Definitely check that kill switch. Press down on the end nearest you.

BTW, your bike has a lot of miles on it.

Has the cam chain been checked on it?

Just for info,....the title read "Bike Won't Start"

The title should have read, "Engine won't Crank"

The bike not starting was not the problem,...
the engine not cranking was the real problem.

Using the proper title will get the quickest most accurate replys mechanical techs here. ;)

Sometimes my start button gives problems
and does not respond at all, then suddenly
it works or if you press it hard enough that
works too, I think it needs replacing soon.

-----------------------------------------------

basically we  want to see if the bike runs in the first place
and if power is reaching the CDI and if the coil is working
properly; if the bike starts, this will mean the problem rests
in the starting system only:

1. - turn on all switches as if ready to start bike (place in neutral)

2. - grab some jumper cables, attach to a car's battery

3 - attach (-) negative end to the engines clutch lever

4 - then attach the (+) positive end to a large screwdriver,
you will use it to briefly touch the bikes electric starter's
(+) cable/nut end, see the black rubber cap in the pic?
expose that and touch (+) there (give it a  bit of gas too).

5 - this direct jolt of current to the starter should start
the bike if all is well; this produces a strong spark and
crank to the starter; good luck

your starter relay could be faulty (fuses ok?)

Good luck, RP

I had a similar problem....
Turns out the "emergency flashers" was turned on while the bike was off [probably during a cleaning].
Started fine after turning them off... weird.
