Title: side cover dimensions
Post by desithug on 10/02/09 at 08:56:06

I was wondering if anybody had the measurements for the side covers? i got abike but the sidecovers were relly badly made by the guy who sold it to me. i plan to build  new ones but dont know the measurements. also i have no access to welding so i am possibly just going to cut up the parts and screw them on together. any ideas.

I don't know how intent you are on making them, but there is a thread in the marketplace titled something like what do you need.  The guy seems to have a couple of parts bikes and seems to be real good about sharing his parts at a reasonable price.  Just a thought!

the covers for the air filter  and the cdi. also a battery cover would be good.

Yeah, post it in the Marketplace section.  FYI, the "battery cover" is also the base to which the factory tool box locks.

Just get some metal and start shaping it to what looks right.  The left side cover fell off for me on the interstate and got flattened before I could get back around, so I am fabbing up one from 1" wide aluminun flat stock and some aluminun expanded metal (gutter guard from Lowes)  if it turns out ok, I will try to make a right side scoop for the air intake.  will post pics when I get a chance.

that is a nice solution.  Are those aluminum pop rivets?

watch out the expanded mesh can be really sharp.

The batter side covers - dont even bother ... you just fab the whole battery box to take an ES14BS battery.
Easier to find and swap, and bike shops will sometimes let you in their pile of rejects ... most of those get back to life if charged with the right charger. Evidently they barely get 1 hour to prep and send the new bikes out and if a battery doesn't get alive when they put acid in it, they get the next battery and try it. I have picked a few very nice ones from their reject pile.
Cool.

yes, it is aluminum pop rivets with washers to hold on where it goes through the mesh.    Once I had the shape I liked, I cut a piece of plywood slightly smaller than the frame to bend the mesh over.  The cut ends of the mesh are kinda sharp and I had to clip it a bit to make the smallest angle without crinkling.
Thanks for posting the pic, I have had difficulties posting to the site directly.  Get an error message.

Thanks for the compliment Perry, I have to admit it is probably the first project where the end product exceeded my expectations.

Now that the R&D is done and a prototype produced, I can start a sweatshop with my kids providing the labor..........

Next item is the air cleaner door cover.

I am gobsmacked to say the least, with the creativity and craftsmanship that has gone into that sidecover! ... When ya get the other side fabbed up, please post pics ... and if ya ever decide to do another set, I am interested! 8-)
