Title: other size shocks?
Post by seviersavage on 10/01/09 at 05:14:32

I'm looking at some suzuki intruder shocks, but they are 12 1/2 inches eye to eye. Is this workable? Is it going to change the handleing to the point I might regret it?  Anybody else running this size shock?

I have been using 12.5" Progressive shocks for several years and like them very much.  I really like the extra inches of movement available for those hard bumps or holes, and I also like the effect on the front end which creates a slightly quicker steering response.
Do it.

All right Lancer,  twist my arm. . . .

I did it.

Just for general info, if anyone out there has a set or is planning to get a set of PRogressive shocks they want to mount on the LS650, I have a couple of spare sets of the inserts needed to make it work.
$15 ea incl shp

And If I like these new shocks like I think I will I'll be selling my progressive 412 - 4005's 11 inches for what I paid, I'm just a little too big for these. They have about 600 miles on them.  100.00 dollars shipped.

Suzuki 800 Intruder shocks...
Buy a $3.00 hockey puck and bolt it to the bottom of the kickstand....

those 4005's too light for me?? my butt is 157 pounds and I like a soft ride

Those 4005's are too light for me, I'm 240 lbs
they would be perfect for you.
I've got them on their stiffest setting and they are almost right.

Thanks Serowbot for the pic, Looks good. I don't get how the shocks would change geometry concerning your kickstand though. But I'll remember that.

Because it lifts the back higher.

Oh,..it will,....You also need to check for the belt rubbing against the beltguard at the front pulley,.. if it does,.. no biggie, just grind away the offending part of the guard.  It's only a tiny bit... My beltguard is off completely 'cause I like it that way...
I also found the belt rubbed very slightly against a side case bolt,... changing it from a hex head to a domed allen head fixed that.  It only touched on full shock compression..
The other thing,... the reserve level of your petcock will change... less main, more reserve...  trim the main tube of the petcock to adjust that... Raptor petcock has a little less reserve to start with..
Oil site glass will change a bit too... but not significantly...

Whew!... one little thing, makes so many other things different... but that's the nature of modding....

This dude selling progressive shocks sized for the Intruder 800 says they are a direct bolt on, and I thought the Intruder shocks just bolted onto the Savage.. so what inserts are necessary?  Is there a spacer under the upper acorn nut?

Direct bolt-on, is often a relative term... the devil's in the details... :-/

See my post above yours... it would apply to any shock you put on, over 12" tall... ;)

Here's a view of the swingarm and fork angle difference... notice the angle of the muffler to the swingarm, no interference, but close... sag takes half of that away when you sit on it...

I should make a post in the tech section on tall shocks... so I don't keep repeating myself... Apologies...

Misc. rubber and plastic for jacking up the sidestand.. check
Set of stainless, grindable allen case bolts.. check
Lack of belt gaurds.. check

But.. CRAPPITY-SMACK if my Dyna muffler isn't sligtly more upswept, and it extends all the way to the rear axle.  That means it will probably hit the swingarm with shocks 2" longer.

I cannot thank you enough Serowbot, you saved me some headaches. If this mod is to be done with the dyna muffler on, it will have to be a 1" increase instead of 2"   :(

If I get time today I may lift the bike, remove the shocks, and see exactly what happens when the eye-to-eye distance is made 12.5" instead of 10.5"

I agree that this would make a good thread for the tech section, and would not mind re-posting.

I'm starting to wonder If the small compression distance is the problem on my factory new shocks. My brain might be gone, sure seems like a hard ride to me. expensive to keep changing shocks

The S40 has a short travel rear suspension,Motorcycle companies make motorcycle so they can carry two people If a guy weight 150 and the girl 100 that would be 250 pounds,Few people would be that light,That why a longer and softer shock will work much better for most people.I've had a lot of bikes its by far the hardest ride I every felt.

Ok so I just got done measuring and confirmed: adding 2 inches of shock is a no-go with the Dyna muffler, probably even worse clearance problems with the fatass stock muffler.  Here's how I measured it, jacked up the bike, removed shocks and measured distance between bolts:
http://i36.tinypic.com/14tc20m.jpg

11 3/4 would be the maximum.  At this point I had shimmed the back tire up so that the muffler and swingarm were about to hit.
http://i35.tinypic.com/2hwfm74.jpg

Here's what would bonk together. Axle bolt and swingarm against the muffler at the same time.

Oh well, no 12.5" shocks for me.  I like the Dyna muffler way too much to change it.  Maybe I'll change to 11.5 inch shocks if they happen to fall into my lap. Somebody who's running a Sportster muffler should get those 12.5" Progressives off Ebay.

Sorry to hear Boule'tard,... but glad you caught the problem... ;)
I throw enough crap out there, something's bound to help someone sometime.... :-?

I didn't realize, that there is a length difference between Sporty and Dyna... Mine just says for 883 and 1200cc Harley...
How long is the Dyna?...  is it for 1340cc?"...

PS,.. after looking at it,... you could possibly shorten the muffler neck, and gain enough to clear?...  Lot of trouble though...

What about puting a VERY slight bend in the neck of the muffler?  Is that possible? :)

Title: Re: other size shocks?
Post by Boule’tard on 10/04/09 at 07:41:18

Thanks for your responses, guys.  I still think the idea is really good and will certainly help others get their bike riding like a Cadillac.

The Dyna muffler is probably the longest they make, designed for either the 80 or 88 cu.in. HD engine. It goes all the way from the sight glass to the rear axle on my bike.

It doesn't show so great in the photo, but the muffler is also about to hit the swingarm, not just the axle.. so shortening the neck would only solve one problem.  Bending the neck could work.. splay the muffler an inch outward.   I don't want to do that because I have the muffler bolted nice and tight to the rear mount, and I don't want to mess up the currently leak-free muffler/header joint and fitment of the heat shield.

Somebody sneak over to the dealers with a tape, and check the length on a Suzuki Intruder 1400 shock,....  Bettcha' it bolts up too...
I'll try to get over there Tuesday... ;)
Closed Sun/Mon....

boy this short travel thing is starting to look like "grin & bear it" may be the best answer to my problem. I'll take the hard ride and be a man  ;)

Never give up!...  This bike is born to be messed with... ;)

I'm beginning to think, something did change somewhere in the production line...
I'm about 150lbs,... and my 97' would bottom out on big ruts...
On my buddy Nick's 04'?... It won't budge with him on it,... and I can only move it, maybe half an inch...
Maybe, it's time for an experiment?.... :-/
