...is that gonna' clear the beltgaurd on the bumps?....

Post by Rocco on 09/30/09 at 11:36:24

thank u thank u!

and i believe so, it is higher then it looks from this angle...unless the belt guard moves up 4 inches i think i'll be ok lol i hope @least!

i 4got to say that we rejetted the carb! followed lancer's advice, 152.5 main i believe, the 2nd jet was a 52 which is what he recommended, and i left the needle alone for now...she doesn't rifle shot anymore, just a couple subtle growls or gurgles now lol i miss the warning shot but love the strong feeling through the gears now!

haven't taken her on the highway with the jets yet, but she def feels strong. although she has shut off(engine only electrical was still on) when i slow down for bumps. but when i turn my idle screw she is fine. i guess it just vibrated a little loose....

i am lookin into the oil leak i have, but if you're sittin on the bike all the oil is on the left side....is that still the plug? or is it that freaking bolt under the header? and y can't we just jb weld the plug cap? lol

Looking good  ;D

Looks like you moved the turn signals too. Without the backrest struts does the fender offer enough support to ride double? Or is the GF getting her own now?  8-)

haha! u mean the side rails? i'm sure it'll be fine! she weighs less then i do so i don't see a problem!

and u never know! she def wants to learn, but she said she likes riding with me....u know i can't complain about that! lol!!

Any  noise or rattle from that box? I have a couple of those some place around here. Pretty cool idea.

Post by Rocco on 09/30/09 at 12:39:53

thanks! yes! the top handle rattles like crazy, @first i didn't know what was goin on then i looked back and saw it shaking...i could put a rubber piece or something but i don't mind it. my belts squeeks, brakes are noisy, now the box rattles, the more noise the better i guess haha!!

that looks good im thinking of a ammo box on one side and a 1 gal steel fuel can on the other side

The fender rails do not support the fender. The 2 frame tubes under the seat carry all the load.

That does look pretty badass!  And it probably doesn't stick out any more than the original setup with the fender rails and stock turn signals.

About the belt gaurd, I'm surprised it hasn't uh, mysteriously vanished yet.  ;)

That little box ain't gonna hold all the mini gun ammo.   ::)

haha i'm actually surprised the belt guard is still on myself...u never know!!

and i still haven't decided if i want to put the other one on...i def don't want to look like a mini road king lol the shotgun sounds like a much better idea!

it's a .30 cal box, the .50 was huge! i coulda made it into a tank instead of a saddle bag lol

I have two  .50 Cal Cans  Thought about it but am trying to figure out about the belt guard issue.

what about making a bracket to take it out past the belt guard, of course it would have to be done on both sides to equalize the weight.

Bah, just raise the box a little.  That may even help with passenger comfort and that rattle.  Depending on girlfriend buttock size of course  ;D

The is exactly where my oil leak is, drivers left side, and I can't figure out where it is coming from.  It is such a slow leak that all I can tell is that it drips off a part of the kick stand and a part in towards the frame a little.  If you find anything out about your leak, let me know  :-/

Have you guys tried the deodorant trick?  Clean up the cylinder and spray it with some of that white underarm deodorant ("Right Guard" if they still make it).  Then fire it up and look for the 1st dark spot on the deodorant, right where the leak is.

If you hang the box out on a bracket, you may have a problem with the weight causing the bracket (or fender) to flex. I have a top and side cases hung out on brackets, but I got around the flex problem by removing the pillion and substituting a top rack.  The side cases are hung from steel straps that form an inverted "U" shape with the top flattened to form the rack's base. This way, the brackets simply support the vertical weight of the cases.

I can try this.  But my leak is so slow.  After a day I might get a few drops on the pavement.  I'm debating taking it to the suzuki shop, I really don't want to pay them but I don't have my own garage.

Savage oil leak is usually from that head plug. The thing will go through and leak on the left cos the right has the cam chain tunnel and typically it wont leak past that.
Its on the right, but gravity, side stand, and laws of physics prevent it form leaking on the right side.
Cool.

oh ok, the plug is next to the header right? kind of recessed in the head.

y can't we just jb weld over it ? lol

Because then you would have trouble getting to the head bolt just below it if you ever needed a head gasket, ring job, re-bore, etc.  (I figure you already knew this, but wanted to educate newbies who might not have known.) ;)

I put 40mm grenade cans on my bike way back when.  They were good storage units, but I would recommend reinforcing the insides of the box with some steel.  After a while my boxes started bending out. Granted my boxes were much bigger, but it would pay off to do this now.

those boxes are sick! i don't need to carry that much stuff with me, i just wanted to bring a hat or a soda without bringin a backpack!

what about the jb weld that u can ship off if need be, mine only has 8000 miles on her, so hopefully that stuff will be a while.

i cleaned her off and tried to watch where it was dripping from but i guess the leak isn't that fast.....

y can't i just radiator hose clamp or header wrap it? maybe throw a dew can on top of it lol!!

That much heat, expansion and dissimilar materials I really think JB weld will fall off pretty soon.
Besides, the 95+ one is much better, so if you pull the head cover off, you might as well swap that $2 plug with the solid one.
Cool.
Srinath.

if it takes 14 years to leak though, i'll be happy with that!

Rocco,
I just had my bike into the shop for my oil problem, and other things but they don't pretain here.  They replaced an "oil plug gasket" or something very close to that?  I think that is what the guy told me, but at the time I was just thinking, "thanks God it only cost 2 dollars".   It was so cheap because earlier this year when I bought the bike I had them do a 10 point inspection so they just did this for free since it was close to then and they should have found this problem at that point  :o .  If you didn't get your oil leak problem fixed let me know and I will call them to find out exactly what they did.

My local dealer was ridiculing my love for the savage (have owned 6) and they said that ... ewwwww ... leaking ... always, how many head gaskets have we replaced on them .. .and they always leak right there ... again.

I literally laughed and exploded in anger at the same time. They hit people with a 500-700 job when it oughta be done in under 100. And actually work.

Cool.
Srinath.

that's just downright theft. i hate mechanics, i do everything i can on my own and luckily i have a good friend who is an honest mechanic. i didn't say cheap, i said honest! lol

i'm just throwing the idea around, i don't leak very much, so i'll probably just keep adding oil. especially since it's going to be winter down here, which means 70 degree days !!!

Title: Re: ammo box installed!
Post by dmike on 10/15/09 at 04:17:24

This should probably be it's own thread but since it is here.

This is what the part is listed as on the bill, "gasket oil GALL".  It was .97 cents.  Now, if someone knows where that goes it would be helpful  ::)

I don't blame you on not taking it in.  I wouldn't have taken my bike in either except it is 40 degrees here now and I don't plan on going for many more rides.

Title: Re: ammo box installed!
Post by groupus on 10/15/09 at 09:03:56

i hate you for your warm winters in florida. i live in pa and its going to be in the low 40s and raining for the next few days!

a slow leak like yours i wouldn't worry about. its easy to just keep an eye on the oil level, but if dmike can get a pic of that gasket and its easy to get to, it could be a worthwhile fix.

on a side note to one of the earlier posts, the side rails do support the fender. they provide a connection between the front part with actual structural supports to the back where the passenger rest is (on older ones anyway). take that rest off and you can watch the fender flex between the rails. you should be alright without them as long as the passenger weighs less that, saaaay, 250lb? and dont try to land any jumps with her on there either  :P

Title: Re: ammo box installed!
Post by Rocco on 10/15/09 at 13:16:22

haha the weather is said to drop here....to around 70 i heard...that's gonna be sweeeet!

i don't mind keepin an eye on oil level. we have an old nissan that leaks a quarter quart a week, been runnin like that for ten years lol!!

and my girl weighs less then i do, gained a little weight recently so i'm @ 175.

i dropped 10 pounds due to stress, was @ 155....i hated it so i started eating and working out more. i got back on the scale about a month later and i gained 20 pounds lol

so with my weight 175 and my girls, i think she's 140(i love em thick!!) that's not too much load for my thumper is it? with a k&n, sporty muffler, and rejet?

Title: Re: ammo box installed!
Post by dmike on 10/16/09 at 09:08:47

I don't know  that I can get a picture of it.  It was a dollar gasket, and I was hoping someone would have known which one it was by the name of it (its in my last post I believe).

I'm in PA as well groupus, HBG.  Where are you at?

Rocco, I don't think that is too much weight at all.  I'm 220 and had 110lbs on the back seat before (I think she was 110, maybe 100 - I like 'em thin  ::) )?

I do envy your weather this time of year, but not in the summer.

Rocco, the .30 cal ammo box is just the right size for this bike. They are good at keeping water out and very tough. You did a great job of mounting it. Looks great!

thank u very much my brotha!! my dad's a marine and was thrilled that i put it on there!

they are tough little things, i thought i'd have to insulate the holes but i haven't had a problem yet!

i also looked @ .50 cal boxes, although they'd hold alot more, it would have looked odd lol
