Title: Helmet Question
Post by Angie on 09/24/09 at 09:33:02

I always wear my helmet, and I have one problem with it.  In the mornings I have alot of trouble with the visor fogging over.  What works best to fix this?   Would Rain-X do it?

Probably just some anti-fog or leave the visor cracked a bit and you should be good.

Thats an easy one, Just remove the visor!  ;D

Coming from a person who doesnt like visors, i usually keep it cracked when i have to wear it.
If i liked it enough to wear it more i would get one of those anti-fog screens you can put on the visor.
Check out the thread "weather proofing bike" i remember someone mentioned some products that do what your looking for.

When I used to wear glasses the anti-fog stuff worked great.  I would clean them every day with it and never have an issue.  I would think it would work just as well on a visor.

Until you do some research. do NOT.. NOT .. NOT use Rain-X!!
I have heard horror stories of what that stuff will do to plastic.  Maybe they have a formula out now that works on plastic, but in the past it was for glass ONLY!!

I usually do as the others.. and crack the visor open.
Otherwise,  I use this stuff called.. Cat Crap.

I'm not putting cat crap in front of my face.... :-?

All it really does is smell so bad, that you have to crack open your visor to get the smell out...  :-/

I use a full helmet and a fog city or pro grip visor insert. its a piece of clear plastic with sticky edges that fits on the inside of your visor and gives it 'double glazing' which stops and I mean stops the visor misting up from your breath, even when fully down.  on the outside of the visor I use a anti-misting spray that helps rain form into drops and run off

I am printing all this info out, thanks a ton everyone!  I dont like to have the visor up because the wind makes my eyes water, even if I have sun glasses on.  I do crack the visor up when Im sitting still, otherwise it gets too friggin hot.

I do have a cat, hence, plenty of cat crap......

+1
I use two visors (OK three if you count the tinted one for long daytime rides when I'm travelling) one with the fog city insert and one without. This is about the time of year that I switch back to the one with.

Do Not Use Rain X.... Read the back of the label. It states not for plastic.. Always read labels if in doubt. I wear a full face helmet and glasses as well. I have used anit fog and not had great results. I crack it a little and that seems to work the best..

I'll give the liquid soap thing a try.  I hear that shaving cream would prevent fogging- it doesnt.

I apprecate the offer to spit on my visor for me, but I have a 7 year old boy that is forever spitting or spraying/rasberrying everywhere so Im good to go in the spit dept.  Must be a guy thing.....

I look 16?  Well double that and then a few more years and you'd be close.  I might not have a choice about getting older, but I refuse to grow up.   ;)

Didnt someone say one time to use Pledge on the visor?

I'll have to look that up.. :-/

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/

Theres a article about pledge on this site.....reads...

Quote-"As I've said, it works great on plastic of any colour and even on windshields and helmet visors as well. No, it doesn't turn clear plastic a yellow tint, it leaves no waxy buildup. It works like Rain-X in the rain and makes bugs come off easy as well as the dirt and dust.."-end of quote.

And they say to use "Lemon" Pledge only.
BTW-I havent tried this yet but someone here mentioned it at one time.Maybe Skatnbc :-/not positive though but someone said it works.

;D I just love this forum.  Pregnant when I was 9.  Actually my oldest kid is 10.   :P

I have orange pledge, humm...... My main problem is fogging on the outside of my visor.  I do mostly highway riding, and if I do get stopped at a stop sign and it starts to fog a bit on the inside it clears right up as soon as I start moving again.

Thanks again for the info, its much apprecated.

Two things wrong with Rain-X for fogging...as said, it destroys plastic, and it causes moisture to bead up.  For antifogging, you want something that causes the moisture to sheet over.  This is what soap does or try a very thin film of liquid detergent.  The moisture is there anyway, you want it in a clear transparent layer, not in droplets that refract light.

Cat Crap works medium well on my glasses under ski goggles...it isn't perfect and nothing I've found works better.  The company that makes it used to sell the same thing in golf shops with a more genteel name, but I think it didn't sell.

To anyone who does not wear a faceshield. Do it, you never know. Just yesterday I was cruising along at 55mph when I saw what I thought was a leaf coming at me. Nope, a huge arse ROCK. It hit my shield and actually pushed my head back. If I hadn't been wearing it, my cheak bone just under my eye would have been a little funny feeling. The sound of that rock hitting my shield is something I won't forget for a while.

To the question. :D I crack mine a bit till it clears out.

I use industrial lemon pledge - works like a charm.  Use it on my visor and my windscreen.  Easier clean up, sheds water, seems to greatly reduce fogging.

However, i do still occassionally have to crack the visor 1/4" on REALLY bad days (inside/outside wide temp difference).

OK, I admit I am a dumb man, but what is the difference between industrial pledge and the stuff my wife buys at wherever? :-?

Thanks,  I may have to borrow some from her.  I have trouble with pledge and a rag, though :D

Industrial is a larger size and spposedly lasts longer between uses. I just happened to pick that up at an office supply place - probably the exact same thing as regular tho... ;)
