Title: Fixing Oil Leak
Post by easywriter on 09/23/09 at 12:05:08

I have a small oil leak on my 2003 Savage 650. I believe it's coming from where the aftermarket foot peg set-up is connected to the engine. I tried tightening it, but the bolt keeps on spinning. I'm wondering if the previous owner used a standard bolt in a metric hole!

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm willing to listen to both easy and more difficult solutions. Thanks!

if the bolt won't tighten you could always tap the hole  a size larger, use a larger bolt

I hate to do that with the engine. I'm thinking one screw-up and that's a whole bike down the drain.

Are you sure this bolts to the engine?  OEM footpegs are attached by two long bolts that go all the way through from one side to the other.  You may "simply" need to hold the bolt on the left side while tightening the right side.  It requires some acrobatics and contortionism, but that's what I have to do whenever I remove my footpeg assemblies. ;)

All I'm sure of is the oil leak is on the left side and seems to be coming from the top of the kickstand. This is strange, so I'm assuming the oil leak is somewhere from an engine bolt.

There are 2 long bolts that go all the way thru.  And on the other side is a nut.  Turn one hold the other.
These bolts have to be tightened to 50 ft-lbs.
that'll fix your leak.
