Title: Itermittent short or headlight problem
Post by verslagen1 on 09/22/09 at 11:52:39

Getting to work was fun today.
about half way, my bike went dead
petcock already on prime, so it wasn't that.
just filled up, so it wasn't that
Hmmm, no headlight, no neutral light... what's up with that?
blown fuse... why?
the wires pulled out of the taillight couple of days ago and shorted out the fuse, but no, not that.
Tow truck driver pulls up behind me just as I'm ready sneak off the on ramp.  Gives me a fuse, it blows again.  I got to get off and take it apart to find the short, he's says good luck.
Luckily it was all down hill and green lights to a gas station and extra fuses.  I buy a box, there's one 20 amp, one 30 amp and four others 10 and under.
Hmmm, if I take off the headlight I can use the small ones to find the short.  So there in the parking lot I sit parts all about me (note: pillion makes a good "better than sitting on the ground" seat) and I stick the 5 amp fuse in.  double checked the tail light no visable shorts, wiggled all the wires around, nothing popped.  Ok, next... plug the controls back in.  check check check wiggle wiggle wiggle pop.  Ok 7.5 repeat check check check wiggle wiggle wiggle no pop.  turn sigs brake light no pop.  Ok put it back together, start her up, pop.  Ok 10 got me to work w/o headlight.

I know there's a high amp bulb in there.  But I've ran with it since I got it.

Any suggestions besides get home before dark?

"Ok 10 got me to work w/o headlight. "

I don't understand.  What did you leave unplugged to get to work?  The headlight itself?  Where did you disconnect it?  In the bucket?  Or was the only connection you pulled the big one under the tank on the left side?
Check for shorts inside the headlight bucket maybe?

I pulled the plug off the headlight and removed the plug from the harnase as well.
Made it home w/o headlight too.

Went all through it last night, didn't find anything.
headlight was fine, thought it was a high wattage bulb, it wasn't, std 55/60
replaced the wiring for my stoplight, put it all together.
put a box full of fuses in the bag and away I go.

Could you isolate any ignition elements that shouldnt just be "left on" & wiggle wires with the key on & do it till you wiggle one & the fuse blows?
