Title: Hose that hangs underneath bike.  Anyone know what
Post by sproutjw on 09/21/09 at 14:54:21

What is it for.  I took the plug off and I think it was gas inside.  Its not shown in the manuel anywhere so I do not know if I should have left it alone.  Help.  Sprout

You did right. That hose is to catch condensation and is best drained every time you change the oil.

Thanks so much Jedi.  Contensation from what though.  It was either gas or oil or watery oil.  Weird place for a hose especially because its not documented anywhere that I could find.

Thanks again

Title: Condensation Hose underneath bike to plug or unplu

If this is a condensation hose why not just leave it unplugged so you don't ahve to drain it. ???

Any ideas

I lost that plug years ago (don't tell the EPA) and that means I'm
an environmental criminal since I now leave small drops of oil
here and there everywhere I go and that job is allready reserved
for all oldsmobile, jeep & pontiac automobiles of the world (...oh, harleys too  :D)

I'm not certain, but I think the other end of that hose is in the airbox, downstream of the air filter.

If this is true, it means that there is now an unfiltered leak into what should be the clean air portion of your intake.

Sorry to be a party pooper!

Mines before the filter. I made sure before i ditched the hose.

Comes off the airbox between snorkel & filter, IIRC.

One things certain, a guy could fire it up & unplug the tube. If it "Sniffed" all that crap back up into the engine, then we'd all know for sure where the plumbing enters the air.
Ill wait.. 8-)

Plug it....  no matter which side of the filter, it's only inches from the ground.  Lots of dust getting sucked into the air box.

My 2001 had it between engine and airfilter.

It drains the oil vapor condesnate that comes from the vent tube on top of the head.  Yea, that's where they vent the crankcase.  Both piston "blow-by" and the volume changes of that big piston going up & down.

Watch that reference to a very old man. I'm very old and mine doesn't dangle or dribble.  :D I put on a K&N cone and therefore have no need for the air box. I took Gort's advice and put an oil breather on the end of the crankcase vent hose. Looks great! Thread on it a few days ago under either "air box" or "K&N" Go to the second page of "rubberside" and look for K&N. On page two of this thread, Gort explains the air box hose thingy. Check out the pic of his setup. Cool!  8-)

No, No, I don't want naked pics of Oldnewguy, I would like to see pics of his bike with its conversions.

OK, Here goes! Nothing naked 'cept my bike!  :D

I cut the Right side, front and top out the the air box. I had planned on removing it completely, but there is a hidden screw some where on the bottom. As it worked out, the way I did it, I can still mount the covers.

I mounted the rectifier in the air box on the back wall next to the pool table.  ;D

I threw in a pic of my bike stripped. Hey, T Mack, recognize that muffler laying on the table? I installed it and got it running yesterday. That is one great sounding muffler. I live one mile from the local Harley dealer so I get to hear and see a lot of bikes.

And last but not least, The conversion.  :) You know, looking at it, it does dangle a bit. I haven't decieded to secure it horizontally or vertically. Any thoughts?

That's all folks!!  :)

You guys wanted pics, but nobody has looked at them!

Not naked Oldnewguy

You did a nice job, Oldenewguy.  About your asking for suggestions for the oil breather filter attachment, I made an aluminum plate and bolted it to the frame, as you can see in my pic.

Thanks for that suggestion. I'll probably go that way. Only alternative is a tie rap which looks funky.  :P

The PO added a breather filter to my bike as well, but just used tie wraps. I don't think it looks bad at all.

I just need to figure a way to reattach the side covers without the airbox being there.   :-?

That doesn't look bad at all. My white ty rap was temp. You may be able to build some brackets out of light metal to hold the covers. Small L brackets to the frame?
