Title: Oil level dipstick
Post by mpescatori on 09/21/09 at 07:03:21

Hi all,

this is an oil filler plug with built-in level gauge.

http://i.ebayimg.com/24/!B(ojtegB2k~$(KGrHgoH-DwEjlLl)fO9BKdYl-hoq!~~_35.JPG

It's off a 1960's Ducati, but Moto Guzzi and BMW items are 99% the same.

Just to say, there's a long tradition of oil dipsticks built into the filler cap.

OK, now the big question:

Is there any way we can adapt / fabricate something for the Savage, especially since the Savage's oil filler cap cannot be used due to its position (and the internal baffle, duh...)

I was actually considering opening the engine, knocking out that plastic windowy see-thru thingy, and soldering on some kind of "elbow-adapter" I could screw the oil cap into.

This would allow me to check the oil like a gentleman (without having to kneel down with my ear to the ground) and actually using the same hole to pour oil into.

So before it's  8-) , it'll have to be  ::) ::)::) think think think

Thats a real dip stick idea.

Poke a hole in the baffle & put a stick on the fill plug.

I have a better idea.....
Let a helpful friend lend a hand....
I think this is what Suzuki had in mind when they put the window there... :-?

Ironically,.... I don't think this particular bike has a sight glass...  but she doesn't know that,...
and I'm not gonna' tell her... :-?

To do that it would be about a foot long.
plus it would need to go around the primary drive gear.

how about a fuel tank dipstick

or just put the oil in the gas tank,... where you can see it easily!... :-?

Now look what ya done done. It was such an easy answer & you tossed facts in & messed it all up. You know, the engineering to put that window in must surely have cost more than a solid side & a dipstick, so, if it was easy, it wouldnt have a window,,

Uh... right.

So, tell you what...

That Suzuki Dealership mechanic did such a great job on my Savge (no, really, she's CLEAN and won't leak even if you ask her pretty please...
I've been commuting in my uniform all summer, a regular mpescatori (Richard) Gere ...)  ;D

I'll think something up, benchtest it, roadtest it, see how long it holds oiltight, then
SELL IT !
(c'mon, what wouldn't I do for a burger  :D)

It'll be interesting to see what you come up with...
If it's good,... I'll mail you a burger...  :-?

maybe not,.... maybe I'll toast you with a burger... ;)

oh my ... is that 1 piece? cause you DON'T wanna drop that little rod in there  ;D

The only thing I would put in that hole is that oil temperature valve thingie, but a dip stick, dunno  :-?

You can forget about soldering a fitting in the window hole as the sidecase is cast aluminin. Anything you put there would have to be heli-arc welded

Thanks, Stimpy.

The model dipstick I showed is a tried and tested model, as I said Ducati, Guzzi, BMW have all been using this kind of dipstick for the last 50+ years and nobody's ever complained.

The oil temp/dipstick looks nice, but on the Savage you'd want to screw it in place of the oil filler cap, and there's NO WAY the temp gauge can be over 1" long because of the baffle.

Even if I did find a way to use it in place of the see-thru window thingy, what's the point of a temp gauge I can't look at during a ride?
Do I have to stop and lean over to get a look?
::)
Reminds me of the 1950's fuel gauges fitted to Vespas and Lambrettas in place of the fuel filler cap, you had to get off and lift the seat to check fuel level... :P

Still, next service scheduled for end October (when the rainy season sets in) I'll keep you posted!
