Post by RocksimusMaximus on 09/19/09 at 02:57:40

Well... its 3 AM. My bike just died on me on the freeway while I was trying to get home from band practice. Ill probably wind up pushing her the last 3 miles... cuz I can't afford a tow. But anywau... she's crankin but won't turn over... battery seems to be fine. Any ideas?

Being a band member in my former days, things can rattle the brain after jammin' Metallica cranked to 11 for 3 hours straight ;D

With that said...is there gas in the tank? Did you switch to reserve?

...Will someone please answer that phone??!!!! :D

yeah if it just quit on the freeway, i'm leaning toward some kind of fuel problem -

first check fuel:
are you on reserve? sometimes the reserve side of the petcock gets gunked up.

try starting on PRI

pull off fuel line at carb, see if you have fuel there (while on PRI) , if not petcock or fuel line is plugged

- do you have an aftermarket fuel filter in the line -  maybe it's plugged

Possibly Fuel or a Fuse
Maybe lose battery contacts or a dirty carb that got stuck?
So? what was it, pls let us know.

BTW, what kind of tools does the dealership savage
comes with and where are they stored (battery box door?),
I got mine used and I never saw the toolkit

She had plenty of fuel. Doing a visual check I couldn't tell anything immediately wrong with her. But again... it was 3 AM.

So I pushed her home... 3.1 miles (thanks google maps). That was pretty awesome. Just now woke up from that ordeal. Gonna go and see if maybe my fuel line is clogged... that sounds feasible. Any more ideas would be great. I'll keep updates comin as I figure stuff out.

Do I win any prize for pushin my bike 3 miles uphill?

I wouldnt want to rassle ya! Ohh to be young & tuff again,,

Try it on Prime, may just start. Better put a charger on it soon, tho, or it will just crank & wont start.

Before you do anything, open the drain on the bowl,, no gas? Well,, good clue, huhh?

Oh I tried startin her on "prime" about every 15 minutes last night. Any time I stopped for a breather. Popped off the fuel line leading to the carb... and got gas all over me... so I know its not that. Gotta grab my tools to really be able to reach anything else.

I'm thinkin maybe I'm not gettin a spark? Any way to test that other than to try a new spark plug?

Well, I guess you could stand in a puddle & hold the plug wire, but I wouldnt be able to see it, so what good would that be?

Ill bet the battery is way too tired to actually make it start. Give it a boost..

Yeah I've got her on the Battery Tender right now.

If I take the cable off of the spark plug... should I see a spark in the cable itself when I try to start her?

To check spark, pull the plug & put the plug wire on. Hold the plug against the engine to ground it & crank away. Allowing it to come away from the engine while its spinning & in your hand could be quite "illuminating" & an exercise in vocabulary expansion, IOW, dont do that..

Actually just did the spark plug check... She's sparkin just fine... so thats a relief. Pulled the carb (which is about my least favorite thing in the world to do)... and I'm no carb expert but everything SEEMS to be in order. Anybody got any magic tricks that I can do to see if something was keeping the gas from getting to the engine?

Looks like the battery was pretty low... So I'll let it charge all the way up...but that still doesn't explain why she died on me goin 70 on the freeway.

check for loose battery cables both on the bike and on the battery.  Also make sure your kill switch didn't get bumped to the off positition...............
