I went to start my bike last night and this is what happened... I turned the key and the lights came on. Sat on it turned the kill switch to run, pulled the clutch, kicked the kickstand, and hit the start button. The motor turned for a sec then lights went dead. No clicks nothing. Just dead.

I'm thinking this could maybe a fuse? Need your help guys. Let me know if you need more info.

Sounds like an easy enough problem to fix. How old is the bike?
Any previous electrical problems/got REALLY wet recently?

you'll find your "fuse box" under the right side side-cover
(or is it under the seat on the side, can't remember)
either way you must remove seat (2 screws) and side-cover
(2 screws), you'll need a 20A regular fuse (yellow kind I think).

Also make sure your battery's connectors are tight, as is the
chasis ground cable (-) that connects to the back of the engine
...easy job, done in 5 minutes, lets us know how it goes.

It's an 86. I've had no electrical problems thus far. Haven't got her too wet either. I'll def check that out tomorrow. And I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the fast reply!!

On mine I can get to fuses without removing the tank.

How do you access them bill67? Where are they? I've never actually looked for them.

Get low & look up between seat edge & frame along where the right thigh would be if riding. Look for a white box about 3/4"x 3/4" or so,,cant remember how tall, but nothing else is even close to this is size, shape, color. Easiest way is pull the seat the first time, after that, youll never need to fo the fuses.

Fuse ? Maybe is right. But if it is, then there is another problem somewhere. Fuses usually don't blow for no reason.

I'd rather go for a loose/bad connection, maybe at the battery, ....maybe a bad ground.

Having checked the fuses and found them OK, charge the battery then voltage test it before and after starting the engine.

Battery can lose a cell, show proper voltage for all static tests then drop that cell under load (starting) and not have enough voltage to run the electronic ignition module even if attempting to crank it over.

9 volts will crank your starter (slowly) but it will not run your module.

Check your battery connections.Mine does it all the time.Wiggle 1 wire at a time on the battery.

I will def try the connections tom Demin. I've heard that from a few other people as well. I saw some corrosion around the + so I hope thats it.

I check the fuses and they're all good. There was a lot of gunk on a connection from the neg side of the batt so I cleaned that and when I hooked up my car batt to my bike batt..and the lights came on and she tried to start...but then all I heard was clicking.

So as you guys can tell I'm trying to narrow it down. I've heard the clicking before when I ran it down trying to start it w a bad spark plug. But when that happened I was able to jump it from my car. I'm hoping cleaning out the terminals will do the trick.

Any other adivse would be great. Thanks.

This is probably too late to help, but maybe someone else with the same problem will find this thread via a search.

If you're relatively certain that the battery terminal connections are clean and tight, the next thing I'd check would be the connections on the non-battery ends of the two battery cables.

I'm assuming that the car battery was good and strong....
