Title: Fuel line size?
Post by Mattdw on 09/17/09 at 11:36:13

Trying to find out the fuel line size...tore it while disconnecting it from the carb...should I be able to pick it up at AutoZone, etc?
What are the dimensions I would need to give them?

I want to say it 1/4 " ID, but that stuff is cheap enough, so, get a foot of 1/4 & a foot of 3/16ths, if you are afraid of missing it.
Maybe someone will chime in b4 you get ioff work,

the inside diameter is 8mm   im getting a in-line fuel filter so i checked today

Like jabman said,.... it's  8mm, equal to 5/16",.... I went and measured...

You can force a 1/4" on, if you like wrestling...
I mean really like wrestling!... :-?

A knife run around the inside to skin the first little back & make a funnel shape & a lighter to soften it a bit & some spit to lube it,, I bet I could do it..

Use 5/16 and good clamps. Gives good fuel flow.

Of course, buy the right one, but if you ever have to crush one on & it doesnt want to go..then do those things & it becomes a bit less impossible.

I know I am resurrecting an old post but I wanted to add that my measurement of the original fuel line of my 99 savage was 7 mm across the inside diameter on both ends . The 7 mm measurement was likely due to the line shrinking back down to the "real" size after being off the carb for a couple of weeks.  8mm, 5/16 would work fine as well and in other posts  by Oldfeller  he even recommended  5/16 or 3/8 because it will slip on easier and have better flow if you want to add a filter  for more info see http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1211846392..

Definitely use 8mm or 5/16".  Going down to a 1/4" doesn't sound like much restriction - but in a gravity system it is.
(5/16") squared x Pi = 0.3068 square inches
(1/4") squared x Pi = 0.1963 square inches

0.1963/0.3068 = 0.6398.  So the 1/4" is only 64% of the flow area of the 5/16" hose.

If you were to calculate effects of the wetted perimeter vs. volume.....the 1/4" hose most likely will flow less than half the volume of the 5/16"fuel hose.

Take a piece of 1/2 schedule 40 PVC pipe, lay it flat for one mile,,hook it to a pump & nothing comes out,,it blows up at the pump,, no matter how slow, because the hydraulic restriction of flowin inside a pipe that long is just too great, you cant get a gallon an hour,, OR so some smarty pantsed guy told me when I was selling PVC.. & valves & all such stuff..

Good  info  i would be interested in knowing if anyone  has actually  had troubles with flow being inadequate with or without an added in line filter using the OEM fuel hose with a raptor petcock (free flowing) or is it just mainly a precaution to use a bigger fuel hose?

Yes, there have been issues with using 1/4" fuel line and an inline fuel filter.  The 1/4' fittings have a much smaller hole....and they can "air lock" when a trapped air bubble cannot flow upward and block the fuel from flowing down.  I will look and see if I can find the thread where that was discussed.  I believe S-P was the latest victom of this air block when he installed an inline fuel filter....or maybe is was Gerry?

I got some silicone fuel line at amazon... I really like this sh!t.
it doesn't get hard, sticks to the fitting w/out a clamp, but it's hard to get off.
