Title: saddlebags
Post by chunless on 09/17/09 at 09:09:55

hello everybody,

i got the oem saddlebags when i got my s40, but sadly theyre too small and a bit too "girly". i got the supports as well and am looking to get new saddle bags that are at least double the size of the one now, without having to move the turnsignals.  any suggestions?

also, im looking to get a sissybar and rack, but hate the oem suzuki one; looking for a small back for the passenger.

thanks everybody

Same goes for me. I'm looking for bags and I don't want to relocate my turn signals. Pictures would be great.

The rack and sissy bar are OK -- just loose the back pad.  You don't want to encourage your passenger to lean backwards.  The bare bar lets them know where the seat ends, but discourages leaning backwards.

As for the bags, mine came from my Triumph Bonneville.  Too small for the Trumpet, but just about right for the Savage.  I wouldn't recommend buying them -- kinda pricey when they're not bundled with the bike.

Look here for bags.  Great prices and options.

You will probably have to move the turn signals if you want larger saddlebags.

nice looking bike dr harveys -

your suggestion rocks! i think the factory sissy and rack looks awesome without the pad.

btw, one of the reasons i got my s40 was cause i found this site while reviewing different bikes, e.g. vulcan and shadow

listening and reading about this community def. helped.

thanks everyone

I'm not sure what your OEM support brackets look like.  But if they're anything like the saddlebag supports I've dealt with, they just keep the bags out of the tire.  Most saddlebags like the ones above will "throw" over the fender/seat, are adjustable in the amount of hang, and have strings to tie them to the brackets to keep them from flopping around.  (I prefer to replace strings with zip ties too keep from working loose.)   So short answer would be "probably".

River Road Medium slants... Fits well even without having to move the signals.

got a set of river road slants on my 06 hard mounted with ply wood inserts and the oem stand offs..never have lacked for space  got the yokes tucked in behind the bags can carry a 12 pack in each if i wanted... may be up in the market place neat week if my trade for a gl 1100 goes where i think it will..

anyone know the measurements for the saddlebags to fit without moving turnsignals?

Id think the length of strap between bags wopuld dictate the necissity to move the lights. As long as they hang low like a gunslingers holster, you can have big bags.

The rack and sissy bar are OK -- just loose the back pad.  You don't want to encourage your passenger to lean backwards.  The bare bar lets them know where the seat ends, but discourages leaning backwards.

Or, Keep the backpack & put some "uncomfortable " decorations on it..

Wow, I can't believe I got so lucky when I bought a used bike a couple months ago from a Suzy dealer. It already had bag support bars and short turn signals. I said, "throw in saddle bags and we have a deal"
Out they come w/ the neatest looking slant bags,...retail $199 price $99,
They are the nicest looking I've seen, and fit beautifully. I don't remember what kind they were,......I wish posting a pic wasn't such a pain ! >:(

Posting a pic really isnt a big pain.
Pics can be saved in Photobucket,BikePics, etc.(one of your choice.)

Then just copy the pic address.
Click on images in the post(at top/header of post)
Paste the pic in between the img things...(img)here (/img)

At least that's how I do it. :)

i was thinking of gettin some ammo boxes, paintin them flat black of course and screwin them into the back fender....i'm not a huge fan of traditional saddlebags but i look like a dork wearing a back pack while riding lol

would they be too heavy? i think they'd look wicked on there!

So what did you end up getting? I'm super interested in this.

Did everyone go OEM on the saddlebag supports? I tried contacting a member on here but he said he'd be a couple weeks out because he's super busy at work.

My husband and I made my supports out of stainless round rod.  It wasn't super easy, but it was "super cheaper" than buying them!  I did the measuring and told him where to bend the rod.  He bent it and then threaded both ends, made little brackets to attach to the bike, and off I go~~

I had some slim (flat) throwover bags with the strap under the seat for everyday use.  They were small enough that I was able to layer some larger touring size throwovers over them for trips when I needed more luggage capacity.
seemed like a good compromise, not too bulky for everyday and more room when I needed it

I got these for myself and the wife. Love em, just expect to be replacing them every 3-5 years when storing them outside, but then again they zip off to carry inside!

At the time this was the cheapest way to get this specific river road bags online, price is about right for most shops.

Upload pics to a web host such as photobucket or Bike Pics.

Copy the URL of the image and paste it between [img} [/url} but use ] not } to close

Photobucket provides links that already have the IMG code around them.

chunless, those do look really good!  And thanks for the link on the website.  I know others have recommended Dennis Kirk before, too.

We ordered these http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp;jsessionid=XTV2H5AFMR2ZXLA0WTISM4VMDK0OWIV0?store=&skuId=506859&mmy= for my husband's C90.  They arrived today, Wednesday (ordered Monday evening!), free shipping, and they look awesome!  Might just have to pick up a new set for my S40 from them now.  Saddlemen makes a great product, and Dennis Kirk seemed to have the best price.

Those look a lot like mine. Here is the link to what mine are, if it works.

http://www.cycleluggage.com/willie_and_max_sb701_motorcycle_saddlebags.html

Only thing is, I hated them buckles,.....takes way too long to get in and out of them. So I cut the buckles off, then installed heavy canvas snaps on everything,.....much better.

Title: Re: saddlebags
Post by babyhog on 10/01/09 at 08:23:40

Routy, those look nice too.  How's the quality... the "feel"??  I haven't seen any Willie & Max bags in person.  I know they have a good reputation.  I hate randomly ordering something without being able to touch and feel it.  And I dont like the buckles either, which mine now have, but the Saddlemen buckles are just for looks.  There is a quick-release pinch buckle under the silver buckle, and they actually lock too.  Well, little plastic keys, but locks, nevertheless.

Title: Re: saddlebags
Post by Routy on 10/01/09 at 08:36:00

First bags I've ever had, so hard to compare. But I like them, and they look good.
Yep, these have the quick release also, but the straps over the top bothered the releases, so I got rid of them. I still use the release, the snaps just replace the buckles so there is nothing to interfere w/ the quick release anymore.

What does everyone put in their saddlebags?

Could I put a backpack in there so I don't have to wear? It's hold my laptop and a couple of books.. or would I have to take the stuff out?

I'm looking to buy a sissy bar with a luggage rack which is what I'm thinking will fit it better.

Title: Re: saddlebags
Post by chunless on 10/05/09 at 12:50:22

i got the ones above and it fits most everything i need - im also looking at getting sissybar and luggage rack too.

def. fit most books and laptops, though, it really depends on the size of your bags.
