a nice little DP bike bike is fun... I had a Yamaha xt225.  Takes you down all those little side roads that you just go by on a street bike, and gets 75mpg.

I don't have another Bike besides my beloved LS650 ... but I do lust after Honda's "Vintage" Cafe, the GB500TT and Kawi's W650 Bonneville-clone ... both long since discontinued here in North Am. If I didn't have a couple of deteriorated lumbar discs and could handle the weight, a Sportster wouldn't be out of the question either ...

Heck yeah, now is a good time to buy a honda crf230L.  You can get a 2008 model for around $2700 to $3000 with some goodies already installed. The price bottom fell out of the L models when Honda came out with the 230 'M' for model year 2009.. but the 230L dualsport is way more versatile.  I have one partially souped up, and it hits 85mph.  :D

Also, it's hard to beat a DRZ400 for good value and tons of aftermarket support in a kickass bike.

Suzuki DL650 V-Strom.

If I'd wanted a bigger cruiser, I sure like the Kawasaki Vulcan Classic.

Title: Re: ... Other bike
Post by Rocco on 09/17/09 at 08:14:24

IF i got another bike it would have to serve a different purpose. the v-strom is sick looking and seems to be an off road touring sport thing lol very versatile!

OR something classic that took alot of work, like an old bonnie or an indian, why buy another cruiser when i don't want to go cross country and they don't fart  ;D

Since some others have mentioned.....wants instead of haves....

I like the Indians,Kawasaki Drifter and the Classic model Suzuki.

Yep,its mostly about the looks on those ;D

But I think any Kawasaki would be a good bike.
And wanted/thought seriously about the Kawasaki 500 before getting the Savage.

(Even looked around, read in the Kawasaki forums prior to buying the Savage ;)
Not that I dont like my Savage now though!

'07 250 Ninja (I don't like the '08 as well).

On a serious note, Gideon, what are you looking for in "another" bike.  Better to narrow down what you want to use it for.  The Savage does a lot of things well, but it doesn't do everything.  Maybe if we knew what you wanted it for we could give you some better recommendations.  Otherwise, if it's got 2 wheels, it's good enough for me!

I have a Suzuki Burgman 650 along with my S40. I ride the Burg on long trips and also around town on days I can't swing my leg over the S40. I'm going to stay on two wheels as long as I can. One definitely has to ask what they want in a second bike before buying. I bought the Burgman for touring and also because I know that my disabilities keep me from getting on the S40 at times. Plus the darn scooter is a lot faster than the S40.

Modern Raleighs are made in asia somewhere, could well be by Giant who makes frames for a lot of people.  Giant makes super light really nice riding frames at the top of their line.  Their carbon fiber work is very good, long developed by providing frames for Once and T- Mobile.  Really good bang for the buck.

Post by BurnPgh on 12/11/09 at 23:11:35

I do like bonnies, but Im hooked on the simplicity of thumpers. Maybe one day I'll get an sr500 to mess around with. For now I've got plans for my savage that i cant afford really, plus the sr's arent very plentiful in these parts. I'd even get a Harley 350 sprint (They did do the 350 sprint right? Or did they change the name for the 350?) if the right deal came buy.

Title: Re: ... Other bike
Post by Charon on 12/12/09 at 06:29:41

The Harley 350 Sprint was an Italian Aermacchi. Aermacchi's motorcycle division was owned by Harley, when Harley was owned by AMF. By now those are about thirty years old, and I would bet parts would be hard to come by. Also, they had left-foot rear brakes and right-foot shifters.

Hi Oldfeller

What is a xs 535 ?   is it kin to a sx 650 ?

My SuperSlab bike is a 04 Harley Roadster with 4.5 gal tank and the Sportster's Custom seat (wider).

But the Savage has no replacement .

Title: Re: ... Other bike
Post by BurnPgh on 12/26/09 at 00:32:58

i think its xv535. A tiny little vtwin with a weird gas tank setup (under the seat) thats wicked quick. Yamaha I think. I also think it's ugly as all get out but thats me, though it really is tiny. Smaller and more cramped than my old rebel 250 as I recall.

Title: Re: ... Other bike
Post by Oldfeller on 12/26/09 at 03:18:12

Burn has it right, another low seat height bike that puts out 45 hp and can cruise at whatever speed is needed for whatever distance is required.

Carries 2 big saddle bags and a wind shield.  My road cruiser for short legged old people.

With under seat tank and normal small tank holds nearly 4 gallons of gas, so it can go a bit between pit stops.

I looked hard at them also, but opted for the Vstar 1300. Yamaha has the best fit and finish of all the metrics and thousands less than a comparable Harley. IMO

Back in July one of my buddies came home with a new Suzuki C50. I thought it was a nice bike but didn't care for the radiator, spoke wheels or the shaft drive. Besides, I've had Savages for 20 years. Well, since my current Savage is in the middle of a makeover & I hate being without a bike long enough to get it done, I started doing some research.
I knew I wanted air-cooling, mag wheels & a belt drive. And I wanted decent fuel economy at a good price. In other words, basically an updated Savage.
Nov. 19 I flew to Tennessee & for $7089 I rode away the next morning on a 2009 V-Star 950T. After little more than a month I've put 1800 miles on it while making it mine. I'm very happy with my purchase & would do it again in a heartbeat. 8-)

I have several ...
I got old school - xs 650, GR650, and a XS1100 in various states of "waiting for the genius to strike" ...
Some of the small sport bike genre ... 5-6 GS500's ... have had 17 of the little buzzards ... compared to 6 savages.
Also have Virago 1100, 700 X maxim, eli 1000, GSXR1100 and SV1K.

Savage is fun still.

My all time favorite though has been an 84-86 air cooled maxim. IMHO least flaws of any bike made.
XS'es are close but stock they vibrate like mad. GR's are cool but that disengaging starter clutch at 5K can be a bit disconcerting.

GSXR's are top heavy, SV - well who wants a new bike, eli 1000 - great bike but hard to work on - though compared to the other muscle cruisers of the era its the easiest, the rest all were V 4's, GS 500 are cool but tires and chain get $$$ ... virago is well ... electronically a nightmare.

Cool.
Srinath.

Title: Re: ... Other bike
Post by Oldfeller on 01/07/10 at 11:08:50

Amen on the Virago electronics -- there are a lot of other older bikes that don't "age out and die" electrically, but Viragos were of that advanced first wave of all electronic bikes back when they really didn't have the state of the art worked out all that well.   The potting compounds etc in the electronics get old and die on you and there are no replacement parts ....
