Title: which fork oil? Post by jabman on 09/15/09 at 01:47:40 im replacing the fork seals due to leaking oil from the top of my right fork . Suzuki manual states to use Suzuki #15 oil. would i be ok with synthetic 10w fork oil? |
Title: Re: which fork oil? Post by bill67 on 09/15/09 at 04:06:35 Synthetic is better .but don't go thinner the synthetic will make it move like thinner oil. I use Klotz racing synthetic 15 weight. |
Title: Re: which fork oil? Post by LANCER on 09/15/09 at 05:23:22 I like 20wt Amsoil fork oil because of the firmer damping feeling. |
Title: Re: which fork oil? Post by mikestrikes on 09/15/09 at 08:42:03 I use Wal-Mert brand ATF ! ::) |
Title: Re: which fork oil? Post by bill67 on 09/15/09 at 09:30:12 Don't use Fork oil in automatic trans it will make it slip,Its to slippery for that. |
Title: Re: which fork oil? Post by sakara on 09/18/09 at 08:58:25 I've used Mercon/Dex atf without issue on a few bikes. Bang for the buck. If price doesn't matter, though, using 15 or 20w is a good idea as said. |
Title: Re: which fork oil? Post by PTRider on 09/18/09 at 10:19:17 Changing the viscosity of the fork oil changes the damping characteristics. Standard ATF is about 15 wt. It doesn't matter which variety...Dexron-III, Mercon-V, etc., and the brand doesn't matter. The newest low viscosity ATFs like Dexron-VI are about 10 wt. Fork oil must have a very high viscosity index...thickens less when cold and thins less when hot. You don't want a damping change from first thing on a cold morning to hard riding on a hot afternoon. Synthetic oil has a higher VI than conventional oil. |
