Title: gas mileage
Post by floggindave on 09/12/09 at 20:03:44

soooo, im getting like 80 miles out of a tank of gas on my 05 suzuki s40. that seems kind of low to me, does anyone else get any better mileage? that isn't including the res.

Post by Routy on 09/12/09 at 20:48:15

With very little WOT, I just got 102 on this tank, and I'm expecting to need reserve very soon on the next ride. But this is the first time I checked it. I just installed a bicycle speedo/trip meter, and it seems to be quite accurate, and it now shows 102.
I thought most are reporting 50+ mpg.

Mine is an 07

55 mpg is about right on stock bike if you behave. I'd rather grin than behave. As they say in the fine print: "Your mileage may vary."

As low as 38-40ish (rough gas pump math) in town if Im speeding around and accelerating hard. Usually closer to 45 with "normal" riding. Around 50 if I intentionally keep revs a little low. Once I hit the highway however, my mileage climbs nicely. At 65mph I get a consistant 62-63mpg and this is with SE and appropriate rejet. Not too shabby. I gotta admit though, I do miss my rebel for its mileage. On that wee thing I never got less than 60mpg and as high as 77.

Right around 60 mpg,... a little more if I behave,,, a little less if I'm naughty.... :-?

thats mean you're hitting reserve at what...120mi?

Me too. I was getting between 60 and 65mpg. 120 out of a tank easy. I went just over 130 one time without hitting reserve. Depends on how I drive. Although, with the Dyna muffler and carb rejet, I have not checked my mileage. I should do so.

I have a 2005 with sportster muffler and re-jet and I hit reserve around 120.

I'm usually hitting reserve at about 100 miles.Aftermarket muffler,and jetted '86.And I'm a pretty big guy.

Post by Midnightrider on 09/13/09 at 07:37:53

I'm getting around 60 with stock jetting. I have come out 3 turns on the idle jet. From past experience rejetting can affect mileage up to 25%.

In stop sign to stop sign, really flogging it, 40 MPG could happen, but youd have to TRY to get that crappy of a MPG average. If thats all youre getting & youre riding anywhere near a conservative ride, something is wrong.
Check air filter
look at spark plug
clean carb

I had always averaged between 50 and 55 mpg.  Now with 2/3 white spacer, Sportster muffler, K&N air filter, and 1 1/2 turns out on the pilot air screw, I'm easily getting 60 - 65.  Interestingly, if I ride between 65 and 70 mph on the Interstate, it seems to go back down to the 50s range.

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by Skid Mark on 09/14/09 at 09:06:27

I'm averaging around 55mpg (us gallon) all stock with a combination of city/hwy runs. Hwy is typically 65mph.

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by sjaskow on 09/14/09 at 10:28:36

I'm averaging 58.6 on 06 S40 who's only mod is a Suzuki windscreen.  I can get low 60's if I stay off the interstate and usually get 55-57 on my commute loop with is about 80% surface streets and 20% interstate.

I've also noticed that 10% Ethanol gas is pretty much guarantee of mileage in the 50s.  You may want to check if you're buying 100% gas or not.

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by babyhog on 09/14/09 at 10:35:02

I'm getting around 57-64.  I've also started using the lower octane gas (since someone pointed out that the "premium" gas usually sits at the gas stations longer because less people buy it.  After I thought about it, I would bet that the station where I usually fill up my bike probably never sells premium)  My MPG has actually increased since.  I'm keeping a spreadsheet on my cell phone and don't have a ton of data yet, though.  Just a few tanks.  I try to fill up about every 100 miles.

Stock 06.... but getting ready for a muffler change, so I'm curious to see how that will affect it too.

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by JustPassinThru on 09/14/09 at 22:14:51

With an 05, 100 miles to a tank...reserve to reserve.  Takes between two and 2.2 gallons each fill-up.

Which is apparently about average here...but given the limited performance, seems a little low.  Especially since my other ride is/was a Burgman 400...which with more power and a higher top speed, and a belt final drive, got about 60-65 mpg.

The Burgman had other problems, and it's gone.  I went with this machine...I would have thought the manual gearbox would have done better, not worse.

I geuss that and the rejet explains my relatively low mileage. In the 'Burgh there's no such thing as 100% gas. It's all "up to 10% ethanol".

Ok,...and the point of the post is ...???
Yr model ?
Stocker ?
Any mods ?
Type of riding,.......naughty,.. WOT.....nice...50 mph ? in town,..country.....freeways ?

I mean,....you don't get 63 mpg under all conditions. If you average 63, means you're working between 53 & 73 ??? Amazing !!

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by Charon on 09/18/09 at 08:52:26

Mine is an '07 S40, stock except a windshield and removal of the brass cover over the idle screw. With 63 recorded fillups, the average is 56.1 mpg; standard deviation of 6.4 mpg. Highest is 73.8 mpg running around the Rocky Mountain National park at low speeds; lowest 39.6 mpg running westbound on I-80 into a headwind at 70 - 75 mph. I usually drive at or slightly below posted speed limits.

I tried the "white spacer mod", but noticed no performance difference. The mileage dropped from mid 50s to high 40s, so I put the spacer back in. It is conceivable that living near 2000 feet altitude, as I do, richens the mixture enough without modification.

That sounds right. So you probably didn't have the surging conditions at 1/4 throttle like I do. I need to richen up the "midsection",... when the tank get empty it will be easier to R&R ?.

And it seems to me that if the engine is running lean, (not running right) kinda lopeing along at lower speeds,....that it is getting less mpg than if it was running correctly. So if I richen it up a touch to where it is running smooth, I would expect better mpg, if anything.  :-/

1998 Stock Savage + Windscreen and have had the saddle bags off for a while now.

I get around 55 mpg on avg.

I did run it to just about bone dry ( tapped reserve)  and got around 120 per tank. At the gas station I could see a little gas down in the bottom maybe could have got 5-10 more miles. :-/

All riding was done on back roads around 45-65 mph.

I would love to get 60/mpg consistent.

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by prechermike on 09/18/09 at 12:23:43

I had no intention of posting here, I guestimate I get about 50 mpg.  Today I had about a 70 mile round trip and a trip planned for first thing in the morning.  I needed gas, so stopped and filled up then filled back up before coming home.  When I got home this had come back to the top.

I drove 58 miles (from gas station to destination back to gas station) and put 1.1 gallon of gas in it.  Works out to about 52.72.

Maybe 10 miles in the city 35-45-50 the rest was on highway and back roads 55 all the way.  I ride like a good boy. ;)

87, dyna muffler, white space mod, did not rejet just adjusted the idle mixture, windshield and 295 pounds of me.

I am pleased! :D

i usually fill up every 100 miles b4 i hit reserve, last time i ran out had to switch to reserve on the side of i-95 @ night, not a fun time! but i do alot of in town, a little highway, a little 2 up, and alot of poppin....not sure how that affects gas mileage but it's my favorite part!

oh yeah, '95, sporty muffler, k&n stock air box, rejettin 2morrow after karate. maybe takin the paint off the tank freed up some weight and a little horsepower lol!!

The best I've gotten is 55mpg which was mainly secondary roads at around 55 mph. The worst was 38 mpg on twisty up and down back country roads. I was running second and third gears way out with a lot of WOT. I average 48 mpg on a regular ride which has to be my riding style.

96 modle with sportster pipe 1/2 inch hole in divider, memphis shield 18x21 inch, saddlebags, 32,000 miles on it and 48-52 mpg.
But it sounds so good when its under a load taking off or climing hills. !!

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by Bug Chaser on 09/19/09 at 10:37:29

I get 59 MPG with a 06. Have a windshield and saddle bags, no performance mods. Combination of Hwy and side cruises, but in South FL there are no hills, except if you count bridges. Usually ride conservatively on the HWY, about 70-73 MPH.

Just how badly do hills affect MPG? I mean, sure, its working its little butt off going up, but hills usually have a down side, too..dont they? Shouldnt that Coasting Down effect kinda offset that Chugging Up thing?

Title: Re: gas mileage

For some reason,... I get my best mileage on my mountain ride... usually 63 to 65 mpg....
The ol' girl don't even feel the climbs and the downhills take no gas at all...

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by LostArtist on 09/19/09 at 11:13:24

I get an easy 60 mpg, probably a bit more. no hills here though. just overpasses, I ride a mix of highway and town driving, average speed is probably 50 mph but I punch it to 70 mph if I have to on my short stretch on the interstate

Miles Per Gallon = Miles divided by gallon

80 divided by 1.6 = 50 & 50 x 1.6 = 80 50 x 1 = 50   & . 6 X 50 = 30
30 + 50 = 80

its not about being good at math, its all about how the problem is looked at. Lots of ways to go at them, but division is about the hardest for me,, no , it IS.

To get the best mileage from a Savage you really need a top quality OIL. Yessir, that's what makes the difference. Let me run out to the shop and see what brand and weight I use. Meanwhile you can discuss it among yourselves.  Boofer

57.0 mpg average on mine (see signature) for the last 3,000 miles (the bike currently has 10,000 miles on it).

Stock as far as engine and carb go, small windscreen, almost exclusively urban riding.

When I had my stock (no mods) '03 Savage, I routinely got mid-60's mpg when Riding some of our coastal bi-ways at speeds of 50-70kph with no "stop n' go" traffic ... around town, commuting, etc. usually 50+ish ...
My current '05 S40 has the enrichment srew out about 1-turn and gives 50-55mpg under almost all Riding conditions ... I haven't been able to better it ...

I taught myself to do math ( basic, add is easiest, X, next down, subtract, then divide is hardest for me) in my head. Took quite a few years, but I can do %s almost w/o pausing, in conversation.I sucked at math in school, dropped out of High School. Ive taught myself more math than the whole 11 years of school I got.

Justin -

Hills always hurt mileage - it takes more energy to overcome the climb than you save on the descent.

The same with headwinds - if you do a round trip, say 100 miles directly into a 20 kt. wind, then turn around and go back, same route with a 20 kt. tailwind, you'll burn more total fuel than you would on that same trip in a no-wind condition.

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by Routy on 12/11/09 at 07:54:41

I agree,.....but........
Lets say flat land mpg is 50, and you start off w/ climbing a long..steady.. not very steep hill to the top, then turn around, turn off the engine, and coast all the way back down, you are saying that the mpg all the way up had to be less than 25 mpg,...right ? That don't seem right. But you ain't gettin no argue outta me !

Title: Re: gas mileage
Post by verslagen1 on 12/11/09 at 08:26:36

When traveling along on the flat, you have about 1/4 throttle openning, gas/air ratio is about 1:14.
Going uphill, you may have WOT, gas/air ratio is still about 1:14.  You just are filling the jug to fullist capacity and getting the full ~9:1 compression ratio
On the flat you may be filling the jug to half capacity ~5:1.
This is the reason for fuel savings at lower speeds besides air resistance and all.

Higher altitude = thinner air = less resistance = better fuel efficiency.
