Title: Gas leak, scary like Ghost Rider
Post by seanbo on 09/11/09 at 22:16:53

So I went out on a ride to day and the bike was running like crap!  It would not idle, I has to give it extra gas at every stop to keep from dying.  When taking off it was real sluggish and would almost die before I could pop it into second.  At higher speeds it ran alright  but then the same problems when I would slow down.   This is a 97 savage with 10k miles, I got it when it had 8k a year ago and it started doing this now.  So I checked out what I could, everything looked normal ( now when I say normal we all know that I mean normal for my bike,  it's a little ruff with dents and dings and a oil leak I've been meaning to fix), so I as a last idea check the oil level and it was fine  but then I saw what scared the crap out of me.  When  I had the bike up gas was coming out of the air filter cover!  so I pop off the cover and there was like over a cup of gas in there.  So now  I'm feeling a little scared of being lit up like Ghost Rider cause of this gas problem. HE  do you think I may need a new carb or is this something else.  HELP!  IT'S GETTING HOT IN HERE!

Im betting your petcock's shot (unless you had it on prime at the time) and your float level is off or your float valve is worn/damaged. If the petcocks shot get one from a yamaha raptor 660. Its $28 or something. If your valve is damaged you gotta replace it which isnt hard so long as you take your time doing it until you know how. Probably costs about $10.

I watched that because Cage was in it...worst danged show hes ever been in. Next was "Next", & that was at least a B movie plot. I like him, but Ghost Rider was the everluvin PITTS.

Yep.. Hes just cool. Mask, Roadhouse & all kinds of Westerns. He looks more Cowboy than most cowboys. I wonder if I could have his vocal cords implanted when he goes?

Whats prime for?

Prime is not operated by engine vacuum... it is used if the bike has been sitting a long time or has had the carb drained, and has no gas in the floatbowl...

Maybe this is unrelated but I put a dyna muffler on about six months back ( love the sound and shotgun back fires) so am I in need of a carb adjustment or something?

Shotgun b/fires indicate a lean condition or a leak in the header somewhere.
Unless youve rejetted that thing, you need to.

Now to correct the lean problem do I turn the idle screw and if so what way?

ccw

Idle adjust screw is on the throttle assy.
Idle mixture is on the right side, under a brass cap. Gotta get that out & then, twist CCW, as stated.
You may want to very GEntly close it, first, counting the turns in, so you can put it back where it is if you need to for any reason. Gently close it, because the needle isnt tough & can be damaged easily.
