Title: Pics of new Corbin Seat
Post by gerald.hughes on 09/11/09 at 11:36:58

Well, the Corbin seat arrived, and I now have it on the bike.  I have posted pictures below.  First a few comments.  The materials and workmanship are up to the usual Corbin standard, which is very high. Also, I was concerned that the seat might interfere with the operation of the side cases.  As can be seen from the pics, there is absolutely no problem.

There are two concerns that I have about the seat.  First, as you can see from the picture of the bottom of the seat, the passenger seat is not connected to the fender.  It simply rides on rubber bumpers.  I am not happy with this.

My second concern is the the steep back on the seat effectively shortens the seating area.  Since I have a rather larger rear end, I am afraid that it may push be too far forward.

Finally, all that I have to do now is get a few hundred miles on the seat and then I will report back. (Corbins do take some break in to get really comfortable, but it should be way better than the stock seat right out of the box.)  Oh yes, I almost forgot, I had to remove the lift that I had on the front of the stock seat to install the Corbin.

Here are the pics.

Very nice looking seat there... That probably would've been my option had I not bobbed it. :)

Whoa...I have been surfing the Corbin and Mustang web sites every week for the last 6 months hoping that one of them would make a seat for my 07, and never saw one listed. Is yours a one-off preproduction sample, or is Corbin now making seats for the S40 as a matter of routine? I am the guy who just bought a Buttybuddy, wish I had known about Corbin also if they now make seats for the S40

thanks,

paul

Dang, that looks awesome!  I'm envious!
Is there no way to attach something to the bottom of the seat's passenger area to attach it to the bike?

Email Corbin and tell them that you have a bobbed Savage and would love to have one of their seats, but that it would have to be a solo.  If they get enough email, they will do it.

It is a standard product now, thanks to one of the members of this site who loaned Corbin the use of their bikes to develop the seat.  Go to their website and check it out.

I am sure that there is, but I am not sure that it is needed.  The seat pan is very stiff, and there are rubber bumpers.  I rode around for a while this afternoon, and kept checking the back, and it wasn't moving around.

I think they need to add a strap for those that hang on with their hand and not their cheeks.   ;D

I want to know how wide the seat is also!

Can you measure for us people that like a wider seat ;)

And ....does it feel odd with sitting closer to the front of the seat or feel like you have less seat room when riding?
Does the seat front feel lifted enough, like the way we do ours?

Sorry,I'm full of questions!

Title: Re: Pics of new Corbin Seat
Post by gerald.hughes on 09/11/09 at 16:15:23

Freespirit,

I believe that the seat may be a half and inch narrower than the stock seat, but it feels like it provides a lot more support.  I think that may be because it is basically flat, whereas the stock seat is rounded, and you really don't get any support on the rounded part.

I lowered my mount back down to put the seat on, and I don't feel the need to raise it again. That may be due to the shape of the seat itself.

The seat doesn't feel odd exactly, it is just that with my very large butt, it does push me farther up the tank, but remember, I am 5'6" tall, and weigh over 300 pounds.  My experience with the seat is going to be very different from that of most people.

Thanks Gerald for all the good info!

I may just keep fooling with my other seat and even try some different things on it,see how it does before I decide what to do.

I dont have the money right now for the corbin anyway.Maybe in the future though!
So The info is good to know! (I'll be saving this Topic :)

FreeSpirit maybe when Marine 5317 gets his Corbin seat he can measure it and tell us how wide it is,

Title: Re: Pics of new Corbin Seat
Post by FreeSpirit on 09/11/09 at 17:10:31

Yeah, the exact width size would be good to know.

I like the small backrest on it...or the rise in the back.

It does look good also,overall.

I just hate things that you have to buy and cant try out first...even sit on it...LOL.
Maybe you can return it if you dont like it :-/
I'll have to look into that.

bill...I have 2 seats.One off the 2002.
The other one is the type with stitches across.(Older seat I think)
I swear the other one is wider.
I'll have to measure and let ya know for sure ;)

(I like the other one better,it feels better. At least in width)

Not disrespectin the corbin but my sportster seat has a back like that and is 13 1/2 inches wide. It is a low cost alternative, not a direct bolt on though.

No disrespecting the Sporty seat (My last bike was a Sportser, and I put quite a few miles on that bike.), but the Corbin seat is a lot more comfortable, right out of the box.  It is more expensive than the Sporty seat, but ask yourself, "Why are there so many Sporty seats available?"

Title: Re: Pics of new Corbin Seat
Post by PTRider on 09/13/09 at 11:34:17

I'm making one more attempt at modifying my seat myself.  Corbin, or Rich's, or any of the other custom seats would be great except for the cost.  Spencer's seat mods (http://greatdaytoride.com/Home_Page.php) are also a very good idea at a better price.

I row and coach rowing.  A rower spends hours training on a hard wood seat that is more comfortable than one hour on a stock motorcycle seat.  The rower's seat has cutouts for the tail bone and sit bones.
http://neaves-rowing.com/spares/r5.jpg
The notch is to the rower's back for tailbone clearance.

1-3/4" holes on 6" centers are my current effort for sit-bone relief, with a big notch for the tailbone.  I'm trying some high density 1/4" foam, although 3/8" might be better.  All this will go under the stock vinyl, and may require the stock foam cut away.  I think this, either in high density foam or gel, will be an excellent answer to the problem of pressure points.  Gluing another 1/2" of foam to widen the seat on each side just where one's butt overlaps the seat is also a good idea.

My son rowed in high school -- really liked it, but is too short to be competitive at any higher level.

It did seem that the winning team in the 9 man shells was the one that had one guy shouting and eight guys rowing, rather than the other way! 8-)

Yep.  I have only put a couple of hundred miles on it so far, and no ride longer than 40 miles.  I will do some longer rides this week and get back to everyone.

Just an fyi - it took several thousand miles - say 500 hours in the Corbin before it broke in on the guzzi - before that it was a bit like setting on the floor - not sure which broken in my seat or the corbin - all day seat now however.

Maybe I'd like the Corbin!!

Sitting in a seat somewhat motionless vs. rowing, I would expect different levels of comfort to be felt.

I was over 2 hours trying to get the holes on the bracket to line up. That was Sat. afternoon. I called out to Corbin today to find out why. I told them I could take my old off in 5 minutes and put it back on in 5 minutes. The service guy I talked to give me some pointers so if anyone else buys one contact me if it doesn't fit right or call Corbin.
I asked him why they didn't put a strap on it and he said there wasn't a good place to hook it to. I told him we all like straps on ours. I had to make my on strap as I use it to secure my backpack when I go to the store. I've only ridden about 28 miles so far. It's going to take a lot of getting use to. as I had memory foam in my old one. Once you set in it you don't move. It's about 11 3/8 inchs from the seam to the front where it meets the tank.  The girls won't have any problem being that close to the tank. I am 5'10" and weigh 193  and I have to have everything in place at the tank if you know what I mean. Hope this info has been some help.

Glad to hear Corbin had their production geared up -- a while back we were hearing about delays. :)

Oh wait, it could be the recession thing and it's demand that's down!  :'(

OK, let's hope they keep production up as we go into an economic recovery!   8-)

Post by gerald.hughes on 09/16/09 at 16:03:18

Well, I was finally able to get a 200 mile ride on the new seat (211.4 miles actually).  So, here is the report.  I was constantly aware of the seat for about the first 20 miles, as I was paying attention to how it felt.  After that, I was completely unconscious of it for the rest of the ride.  I stopped for lunch, and twice for gas (didn't get off the bike to gas.) Since it is not even broken in yet (Corbin seats are like Birkenstock sandals. They keep getting better the longer you have them.)

A small matter that I noticed yesterday, after going over a particularly bad stretch of with a couple of killer bumps.  The seat seams to absorb a lot of the punishment that comes from bumps.  This may be due to the high density foam.  It doesn't eliminate the bumps, but it does soften them.  I hit a couple of bumps that would have normally sent a shock wave up my spine.  I still felt the bumps, but not the shock wave.

Finally, I was sorry to hear that Marine5317 had problems installing his seat. I know how frustrating it is to fight with something that doesn't fit.

I have to say that it only took me about ten minutes to install mine, and most of that time was taken up removing the lift that I had put on the front of the seat.

This is my sixth or seventh Corbin seat over the years, and one thing that I have learned is that the first couple of times that you put the seat on, you really have to make sure that the nose of the pan is properly seated.  The base pans are so stiff compared to the plastics that come on most stock seats, that if the nose isn't all the way forward, the mounts will not line up, and you can't bend the base pan to get them to line up.  So, give the back of the seat a couple of good thumps to get it all the way forward, and then things should go smoothly.

All in all, I am very happy with this seat.  The only thing that Corbin could have done to make me happier, is to build a solo seat.  (If they ever do, I will buy one and put this seat up for sale here on the site.)

Glad you like the seat!! :)
I didnt realize you have had them before.

I think I'd like the solo seat better also.

Is it the Corbin that people say it starts taking on the individuals shape? :-/
There's one seat that does it,but not sure if it's the Corbin.
I was thinking so.
Anyone know?
(not that that would matter if resale,I think it changes to the individual, after you ride with it awhile.)

Gerald,

200 miles on a Savage is a good test of any seat.  Especially if you are giving it a thumbs up.  I have a Corbin on my ACE.  It's the dual tour with the bowl shaped driver seat.  It's also pretty hard padding all around .  Your new seat looks more conventional in the seat design (flat), and with appears to be some softer padding on the top (stitched areas).  If you have had one of the dual tour seats in the past, how would you compare this one to the dual tour seat?

I'm glad to hear some good reports on the seats!!!

We have yet to get our bikes back, and I have yet to contact Corbin again to see if a solo should be in order. At the very least I believe they should take the time to R&D one, and decide to bring it to market or not.

For what it's worth, I had about 1/2" lift on my Savage's stock seat, and the wife had no lift on her S40 when we gave them to corbin, they may have a tight fit because my lift was so small.

I've been busy getting our new house fixed up and looking more like a house than a storage unit! The 30x30 shop in the back will house the Bikes when we get them back for Thanksgiving!!! Not Christmas like we thought! I can hardly wait to try the Corbin myself!

Speaking of seat mods, if a Sportster seat can be modified to fit our bikes, has anyone tried the Mustang seat designed for the Sportster?  And which Sportster model would be easiest to modify for my S40?
