Title: Easy fix for an aching tailbone.
Post by gerald.hughes on 09/11/09 at 11:22:29

When I first got my Savage, my tailbone would start to ache after about an half an hour riding time.  I tried the seat lift, but that didn't help.  Then Serowbot gave me the answer.  It was simple, quick, and most importantly, it worked.  He suggested that I simply cut away the seat base plate under where the tailbone rides.

I got a pair of straight cut tin snips, pulled the back of the seat cover back, and cut out a piece of the base plate.  Then I pulled the cover back over the seat and put it back on the bike.  Total time, about ten minutes.  Cost, nothing, relief priceless.

Here is a picture of the mod.

I hope this helps those of you with sore tail bones.

Seems like a lot of people have  read this post, but no one has given any feedback on the mod.

I don't have any trouble with the tail bone,But I'm thinking about doing that to my 06 seat I think it will let me sit a little farther back were I think it will be a little wider,I'm not going to take the seat apart,I plan on taking out a little of the base with a belt sander.

I'm thinking of cutting 2 slots rather than notching it out completely

Are you talking about that little small piece at the very back,in the picture?

Post by gerald.hughes on 09/13/09 at 07:41:12

That little cutout at the very back of the seat is all that you need.  You don't need to cut out the rubber bumper or do anything to the foam or cover.  It works.

Post by bill67 on 09/13/09 at 08:33:26

The single seat is different the rubber bumper is in a different place its right were I would want to cut it out.  I was more in to getting a little sag in the center of the seat to make it more bucket like.

What years did the savage have the split seat design?  I would like to change my 08' seat into a solo seat.

I went ahead and cut mine out just like you did,It does give a difference feel you can slide father back in the seat and you don't feel anything in the middle.I only rode it 20 miles, it does seem better. I will know better about it when I have driven it more.

Did you keep the seat lift too or just the cutting of the plastic?

When the "Savage" got re-badged as the "Boulevard S40" is when the seat change happened.  I think that was with the 2006 models.

Sorry Bill I was responding to the original post from Gerald.Hughes.

It looks like the seat lift is still in there.

When using the solo seat, I use the lift.  I just recently put on a Corbin seat, so I took the lift off.

One more question.  I have the seat off right now and I am seriously considering making the mod.  How does it make it sit better?  I have lifted the front up 1 1/2" and it helps.  I've heard there's a place just across the line in Murphy that will mod the seat and add 2" of memory foam for $100.00.  Any ideas on any of this.

I think that it works because it lets the foam compress down farther where the pan is cut out.  That is just a guess.  All I know is that once I cut that small piece of base pan out, I never had a sore tail bone again.

Quick, free, and it works.  What more could you ask for?  Besides, if later you want to have more foam added to the top of the seat, no problem.

Okay here's a pic of my 2009 seat where the seats are combined; not split. How would you go about cutting in the middle of the plastic; between the black rubber and the shiny rectangular piece? I don't have a lot of tools and I don't think tin snips would work there.

Here's the other side just in case.

That is a hard call.  As for where to cut, I would say just between the two bolts that hold on the strap.   One approach might be to use a small drill and drill out a square in the desires spot, and then use some sort of cutting file or saw to cut between the holes.  Just a thought.  Almost everyone on this site is handier with their hands than I am.

I did mine with a drill without taking off the cover,I cut mine between the brackets were you bolt the seat on.I cut the drill bit off so only a 1/4 inch stuck out of the bit. thats the same place where Gerald cut his.

So you only used a drill bit with only 1/4" showing and used that to cut across? Or should I go purchase some tin snips like gerald after drilling a couple of holes?

Sorry, I'm new to mechanics.

Bill must know how to sharpen drills.
You can use a drill stop or wrap several layers of tape around the drill to prevent it from going all the way thru.
Personally, I'd use a dremel with a router bit.

Ok, finished making the mod and added another 2" of foam to the seat, now I need a bigger tank so I can ride until I feel the need to get off.  Thanks for the tips on here.

Or, he cut the drill bit off so only a little poked out of the chuck & left the factory tip on it, cutting the shank off & just keeping a length of the flutes to chuck up on.

Try doing your cutting with a dremel tool with cutoff wheel installed. Might have to use an unmounted hacksaw blade in the corners.

Your right JOG thats the way I did it,That seat mod of Geralds worked go for me,I liked it better,I now have a Suzuki gel seat on and going to do the same to it,I did get a dremel and with the small saw blade it should be easier to do.

Drill holes where the corners will be, then use one of those multi-tools with the narrow saw blade to cut between the holes. You can do a better job than a dremel & saw blade. I used this method to cut a w/s & make lowers for my other bike. 8-)

The dremel saw blade I have is a circler blade it only cuts 1/4 inch deep it works great for me.

On the single seat, here are where the two humps (little red squares) are located.
