Title: You got a Talisman?
Post by JohnBoy on 09/10/09 at 13:50:15

You feel you need a talisman to guide you through harms way?
I once heard a ball player say, “I don't believe in superstition...It's bad luck”.
As for me, I'll take all the luck that I can get! I added a 1881 Morgan silver dollar to the front fender (my lucky coin). The coin is “dished” to make it sit up proud and there is a threaded silver tube soldered to it that is flush with the fender. At some point I will mount it in a nickel silver bezel with a center rib running the length of the fender hood ornament style.

PS.
I have a five Mark coin that dates from 1937 with the Nazi swastka and eagle, but I didn't want to attract the wrong crowd at bars :)

My gremlin bell was being tugged on so hard by the gremlins that the attachment ring was nearly worn thru.  As soon as I can get a round 2it, I'll reattach it.

I have a gremlin bell too!

I've already been lucky with it, because it inadvertently led me here, to this forum.  The guy I bought it from told me about another forum, and a girl on that forum told me about this one.  I don't go to that other one anymore....  love this one!

Hadn't heard of a Talisman before though.

:)

I have a small silver cross on a very tiny bead chain that I put around the base of my left side rear mirror.

A talisman is also known as a good luck charm like a rabbit's foot and so on. That's the short explanation anyway.  :)

I keep my good luck charm on my keychain.  It's called a house key and so far it has kept me from being locked out of my house! :D

From the time you could use one to "call someone who cares" I carried a dime in my wallet. Unfortunately a few years ago I switched wallets and forgot to switch the dime. Never felt the need to find one to replace it. One thing that hasn't changed since I was a kid is carrying a folding knife. I've needed it a few times to get either me or someone else out of harms way over the years.

That's pretty slick. I've seen the gremlin bell on several bikes at the poker runs I've attended. I didn't know what they were for though at the time. :)

When I was looking for my bell, I found a few different "reasons" for carrying a bell on your bike.  Google it.  I choose to use the interpretation that the ringing of the bell keeps the evil road spirits from attaching to your bike, thus keeping you safer while riding.
Other reasons include having one as a remembrance for fallen riders... when you clean your bike and your bell, it reminds you of the fallen ones.  Receiving one as a gift, some believe, doubles your luck!

I have a guardian bell that was given to me as a gift. It hangs from the front tree just below the engine. Keeps the evil road spirits away and has double the power from the loved one who gave it to me.

Justin_o_guy2,
Here is the coin you ask about.
If I remember my history correctly, (and that is a big “if”), the German public forced General Paul Von Hindenburg out of retirement to run against Hitler. This was in an attempt to slow down the National Socialist Party's power grab. Hitler was elected Chancellor and Hindenburg was elected President. Shortly after Hindenburg was elected he “died”, and Hitler abolished the position of President. He created the office of Fuhrer, which combined the duties of the President and the Chancellor. And the rest is History!

I am not a great student of history. Until now, I have thought that the only Hindenburg to go down in flames was the Zeppelin that went down over here. Thanks for the pics & the history lesson.

Cool JohnBoy!  Funny as it is I carry a 1881 morgan in my left pocket every day.  I don't know if its good luck but the coin is 100 years older then me.  It  was a dollar and now it's worth like 20 of these paper things!

I(f its copper it is worth a fortune.

How Rare is a 1943 Penny?
If the 1943 penny is made out copper, it is worth quite a bit of money, generally $10000 or more! The reason is that the 1943 copper penny is an error coin. ...
co

I think there were only 6 made.

I had a guardian bell off the 85 Honda 500VT Shadow that I put on the S40, but I guess she didn't like it, lost it somewhere's on our travels.  I have another one coming from a friend, but also picked up a little "dream catcher" in red for her.

Somewhat off-topic....but...

It was the Prussian generals (Prussia was one province of the German federation, which had, like Austria, been historically independent and were historically very militaristic) who pressured von Hindenburg to oppose Hitler.

And, while the Nazis were guilty of many crimes, Hindenburg's death was probably not nefarious.  Hindenburg was old and ill, and heartsick that Hitler was able to rise to the Chancellorship.

As I said I am mounting my lucky coin in a hand made "Hood Ornament". I finished the bright work today, and thought I would let you all see what I had in mind. the first image is with a Chinese Dollar coin for reference. The second and third are of the actual coin holder. As you see it is held in place by two pins set in the bottom that go through two small reference holes in the fender. The coin has a threaded tube mounted in the center, bottom that actually locks the "ornament" down. This will allow me to change coins at will.
The bright work is made from Nickel Silver and Sterling.
Sorry that it took so long to finish but I have been attempting to relocate back east, and work comes first. I hope to have it mounted tomorrow and will post additional pictures then.
