Title: What is considered a "high milage" bike?
Post by Bubba on 09/09/09 at 09:57:02

Hi all, I'm new here but I'm ready to take the plunge and buy an S40. My question is...what would be considered a "high mileage" used bike?
I'm looking at a 2006 S40 with 7000 miles on it.
Would it be wise to talk the owner down on price so I can get new rubber on it?
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

Thanks. He's asking 2k even but I'm not sure how it's been ridden etc...
when would the scheduled maintenance be? Plus what would I need to look for as far as stuff that may need to be checked? belt tension? fork seals? anything else?
Thanks again

well my 93 has 11k miles  after getting it one month later it needed new rubber, fork seals, brake pads, brake hose.  which all added up to an annoying cost

I wouldn't consider an '06 w/7k high miles at all
it's less than 5 yrs old, so rubber should be ok as far as age
7k is after 1st and 2nd service so ask to see records
no records assume the hard stuff wasn't done, more of a talking point than concern.  I was quoted $250 by someone who doesn't know savages.
Most likely he's detailed it so it'll be hard to see leaks.
common is in a hole right next to the header, there's a head bolt there, if it's cold you can reach in and feel if it's oily.
Tires, I would deduct price of tires if less than 50% tread.  Find out what tire he's got and look it up on the web.
Battery, unless it's brand new, most likely it'll be time for a new one.
noises, tic tic tic, valves standard noises get used to it but it's a talking point (need adjusting or looking into)
If it's knocking, as a newb I wouldn't get it, myself I'd deduct the price of an engine and snap it up.
speedo and headlight are common source of noise, also a talking point.
Brakes, check the front pads, easy to replace, alittle on the thin side when new.  7k should be near the end of the 2nd set maybe you should see a groove in the middle of the pad next to the disk.  or 1/16" minimum material.  rear brakes are usually not a problem.

High mileage for me would be points that maitenance must be performed to use the bike.  500 miles is 1st service, 4000 2nd, etc.
major break point is 20k, most bike require cam chain service then.  At 7k, you should look at it soon to find out where you're at, but not critical.

excellent feedback by all...thanks for the input. I'll probably check it out sometime over the weekend. He's moving out of state so if something should go wrong I'd be kinda stuck. Guess I'd have all winter to get things straight tho'
Of course the main thing holding me back is my wife :-[

At the risk of sounding stupid...what is the 1st and 2nd service?
Can I find these in the Clymer manual??

Also be very clear about the bike having a "CLEAN" title. I bought mine from a guy on CL and belived the title to be clean, when in fact he had never titled it, and the previous owner had never titled it. I spent the first month of owning my bike unable to ride it because I was tracking down the previous owners so that the title could be put in their name before it could be put in my name and registered/insured.

sooo, how do you determine a "clean" title???

No liens or salvage should be on the title.

Three years old and 7k, that's only 6 miles a day.
I been driving water cooled for a number of years now, but I would put over 10k a year on my bikes easy. I would expect this bike to do the same "if you keep it up". All bikes are a lot better made than they used to be. Just keep the nuts and bolts tight and change the oil.
I bought a 2004 with 4k for 1900.00 and that was under KBB and even NADA. I don't think you could goo too far wrong. Have you ridden it yet?

Nope haven't ridden it...just saw it on CL. I actually had the same bike lined up a week ago but it only had 3K on it, original owner and was the same price. Just a little leary of getting something on CL when the guy is leaving town in like 2 weeks...

Have them show you the title issued in their name that does not have any liens or salvage listed on it.

Live & Learn from it...  >:(

Make him come to the tax office & transfer it with you..

If those are stock tires (IRCs) with 7,000 miles on them, its been ridden gently. If its the 2nd set & theyre shot, then look at the brand, if they are cheap tires, its okay theyre shot, it its a Metzler, then someones been riding heck outta that thing, but that doesnt mean its hurt. These are some rude, crude ol bikes & they stand up well. A 7,000 mile, 06 model for $2,000.00 seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Guys, what kinda MPG you get out of a stocker? 50+? When gas gets back to $4.00 a gallon, thats gonna be looking good.

Bubba,

Here's the Kelley Blue Book value on your S40:
http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/retail/2006/suzuki/s40/79454

The seller's price is $1030 under...not too bad.

Here's the NADA site...sorry dinner's ready and I couldn't plug your bike in... :D

Justin, I'm still completely stock on my '07. I'm averaging a gas sipping 63 mpg..and absolutely LOVIN' it!

HTH! 8-)

see if you can download the owners manual, it will explain better than I.  And you'll see all of the features of the bike and can ask relavant questions of the owner.  When I bought the PO didn't even know how to check the oil.

My bike had 20K on it when Biddie bought her. Runs like a champ. Never darkened the door of a shop. It's all relative...... :o

If you can't find or can't download the owner's manual on this site, I have it in a PDF file and can email it to you. ;)

Mileage is not as important as who was riding it.  You can thresh a good bike in a few thousand miles.  A competant owner is the first thing to look for.  If the guy has multiple piercings, tatoos all over and green hair, and smells of Whacky Tobacca just RUN AWAY. You can bet he didn't take care of his bike any better than he took care of his body.
The best thing going for you right now is SEPTEMBER.  The riding season is over most places.  Around here, (Washington State) if a bike, trailer, jet ski or 4 wheeler or boat is not SOLD by the 4th of July, the dealers are looking at holding it over winter and paying interest on it for months.  This time of year I'd deduct around 25% from a peak season price.
If the guy thought he was building something from Orange County Choppers and did a "bobber' job with a hacksaw, I would offer garage sale price of $50.  No resale value - period.
The more the bike has been modified by an amateur, the less it is worth.

Hey, thanks for everyone input. I'm checking the bike out tomorrow. I'm somewhat concerned about the whole cam chain adjustment thing. What could I expect in terms of mileage on an original cam chain adjuster???
It doesn't look like it would be hard to replace (if needed) over the winter. Plus I'd like to stick an aftermarket exhaust and jet kit on there. I've also heard rumours of there not being a stop on the adjuster and it could drop into the case and cause all sorts of mayhem...any truth to that?
Thanks

Somewhere between 10 and 30 thousand miles. I recommend checking every 5,000 miles.  Take measurements and we can predict when service will be needed.

Yes the unmodified adjuster can do that if you don't keep an eye on it.
Modify to a Verslavy and forget about it.

Yes, it is true that the cam chain adjuster can reach its limit and fall to pieces in your crankcase.  Most people say replace at 20K, although I did ride 51,000 miles on my original one.
