Title: Rear Fender Headache
Post by SimonTuffGuy on 09/06/09 at 20:45:14

Man oh man... Removing the rear fender with the tire in place was rough! And after losing my 12 MM ratcheting wrench at the junkyard a few weeks ago, I realized just how bad I needed a new one.

It took longer than expected, but it's off! Now I've got to find a spot to mount the rectifier and starting solenoid, until I get my trailer fender cut and mounted up.

Anyone have pictures of their bobbed setups for how they have those 2 items mounted up?

Also - took the solo Savage seat and uncovered it, removed the pad and took a quick ride around the block with just the plastic "frame". I really like the low feel of sitting "in" the bike, but couldn't do any sort of long trip with it like that. I may look for some sort of padding similar to diamond jim and cover it. I'm still waiting for the Ultima seat I ordered to come back in stock. Until then, I'm not sure what route I'll go.

Still quite a bit to do... But, it's getting there. :)

There is an awesome spot on the muffler bracket for the rectifier. Even helps with turning those dang turn signals at stop lights. Nice work, I'm going to be following this closely.

Thanks. It's not a problem to have the rectifier down there in wet, rain, etc?

I was thinking of making a bracket to run between the frame from where the fender mounted (on the top bolts) and then bolt it on the top of that bracket. It would put it under the seat to keep it out of the elements but still be open for air flow.

If you have some wiring that you are concerned about, you can get some liquid electrical tape & seal them up.

The rectumfryer itself is closed off..

Here's how I mount mine on the bobbers.

Thanks! That seems helpful!

Can you show me a side shot close up of the fender and how it mounts to the frame? Did you just use the bottom 2 bolts, or all 4? It seems like if I would use all 4, the fender will sit super high on the tire.

Looks like I need to move all of my wiring away from the frame so that I've got a clean slate to work with. :)

Looks like I may have found my answer over on your BikePics account.

Maybe just to clarify... Did you end up putting some sort of actual spacer in there so that it doesn't move around... or something else?

I used some chrome spacers on all four on the '87(purple).But you can tighten them all down. Here are some on the '86.I just used 3/8ths nuts for spacers.

That's helpful. Thanks for the pics. :)

I need to get a tail light of some sort mounted up so I can ride it, but this is where I'm at now (better pics). I should probably secure some of those wires a little bit better too.

I think those Boulevard emblems are finally due to come off the sides of the tank at this point too. I like them, but I think they're going to look a little out of place once the fenders on there.

I like the plate bracket. It would look good with a taillight over the plate. The whole thing is looking good.

You guys do nice work!  Never thought of using the original seat pan...
good idea. made mine out of 5/8" treated plywood sandwitched in
between some heavy fiberglass cloth. gets us down right on the frame.

Not sure if it will work for us yet, as the boy is 6'5" and I'm just over
6'3". It sets us forward a lil because of the horns on the frame back there. (will cut some off) May do some changing, but did want to keep
the shocks(not sure)LOL

Do know one thing, if you keep the shocks you will want the fender
to float with the swing arm or it will look like a dirt bike. With struts
its no prob, they look nice that way.    Keith

Thanks. Found the plate on EBay and had the guy add 2" to the length so that it would clear the pulley with the belt guard being on... It also let me run the saddlebags that I was using.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to use an LED strip that'll mount on the fender itself instead of having something off to the side. I'm not 100% sold on anything yet, so we'll see.

Demin - Where did you mount the computer box? I got the wires moved around enough so that it fits into the tool box, but I'm not sold on it staying there.

K - that's a cool looking seat too. I'm prety sure the Ultima seat will be what I end up using once it comes it. Like I said, the stock pan isn't comfortable at all... And until I go and get a pad and stuff to cover it, I'll be at $50 in materials, which is the cost of the Ultima seat.

K-Check into Ed L forward controls.I'm 6'3", they help alot.
Simon.I mounted the box under the solenoid.

Thanks Denim, Yeah we're planning on forwards, will check them out.
Yesterday had Matt (my son) on the bike mocking some control locations. To make the bike fit him with the seat where it is, looks
like we have to go 8" out and 1" down.

Seems like a long way LOL

Thanks Demin... Not sold on the location for the box yet. I'd like to take the battery box out or go with something smaller. Not sure how to take care of that yet though... Although, with the air box out, it doesn't look too bad where it sits now.

The Ultima seat should be here tomorrow. So I'm excited for that to come in and get mounted up.

From another forum that I'm on, someone else was talking about bobbing and posted up about a false oil bag that holds the electronics and battery. So, I went out to Google and came up with G&L Choppers. They make this:

http://www.freewebs.com/glchoppers/battbox2.jpg

http://www.freewebs.com/glchoppers/battbox1.jpg

I shot them an e-mail to get the size of the battery box to see how it'll fit. I've got to take their measurements (overall size of 8.25" front to rear, and 8.5" side to side, endcaps are 4.5") to see how that'll fit in there. Without the stock battery box, and mounting that up in there, I think it'd be a decent fit.

Anyone else on a Savage running something like that? Interested in seeing pictures if you are.

I don't have one yet,but that's what I'm going to run too.TC Bros also makes a nice box. www.tcbros.com Also www.ardcorechoppers.com

I've looked at TC Bros before... I like the one I posted since it's semi-integrated into "one" unit. Plus, they said everything is hand made and can be customized... So, I would think that I could have the box moved further into to electronics tube to make it seem a little smaller.

I have also thought about going that route. I really like the look of those boxes and I know it would clean so much stuff up.

They do add to the look... Plus, it would get the battery out of the stock location and open all of that area up. I've got to take some measurements when I get home today, but I have a feeling that it'll work just fine.
