Title: Mysterious Spring
Post by Mattdw on 09/05/09 at 19:40:48

Hey all,
I was doing some weekend work with my gas leak gushing everywhere.
I got some things apart, and saw this little spring on the floor.
I looked through some of the parts diagrams, and can't locate it.
Here's what I took apart.

  • Took off the seat
  • Removed tank
  • Removed tool cover
  • Removed battery
  • Removed battery box (easier to get the next thing :) )
  • Removed carburetor

Note :
I found the spring BEFORE I removed the battery box and carburetor
I'm thinking *maybe* it is part of the tool cover lock mechanism?
Anyone else recognize it ?????

That really does look like the spring under the oil filter cover that presses against the oil filter.

Yeah but saying he took off the tank makes me think it really is one of the ones under the speedometer. There are 3 in there and if it gets over tight it could break and it could have come out.

Speedo
oil filter
carb

about the only places I can think of on the whole bike that use springs that look even close to that. The rest are hooked on the ends.

Come on guys, we ALL know that is a framis spring that connects to the fanortener rod...without it on the spline, his framis won't spring back to the firing  position and he'll get that dreaded pfaaaaaaaaafpt sound.

T :D

I took the tank back off and looked under it...all 3 springs are intact and good to go...

Did you take apart the carb ever?

Without a real sense of scale... the only spring about that size is in the carb, the air shut off spring i think.

Other wise I think it's a gift from the road.

I'd pop off your oil filter cover just to be sure. That does look an aweful lot like the spring between the filter and cover. If you crack it open and see theres no spring inside your mystery is solved. In that case Id also change your oil immediately if I were you.

Did you remove any covers off of the carb? There is also a little side cover with a spring under that. It is on the side with 3 screws.

One more good reason to clean the work area before doing any work.

Yup, I have no idea what it is from then. I've listed ever spring on the bike that looks even close to that...... I guess you'll find out later for sure if/when something doesn't go right.

Well, that spring doesn't seem to be strong enough to handle anything major mechanically, so I'm not too worried at this point.

Trying to remember the size, but it seems to me there is a spring in the starter switch that upon disassembly will shoot across the working area. Not sure if the switch would work without the spring though.

Need another pic, next to a ruler, side & end view.

Seems to me that you're also having a problem with the petcock.

If you haven't taking it apart, then someone did.  And forgot to put the spring back.

Unfortunately...totally different issue :(
Spring found before I even took the petcock apart :(

I was WRONG...
Yes, was having petcock problems, and didn't even remember that I DID take it apart to inspect the diaphragm.
I also ordered a new (well used) petcock to rebuild mine...Opened up the new one, and voila! The magic little spring was right there...the same one that fell out of my other petcock!
I guess in all the work I was doing on the bike, I forgot which things I did when.
Mystery solved.
:)
