Title: Newbie needs HELP
Post by SilvrDragon on 09/05/09 at 17:51:16

So i have a 2003 ls650 and all year long running like a champ. So i put on a k/n cone filter and open jardine exhaust on it, so i re jetted the card with a stage one kit. So last week the battery died on me so this week i put in a new one. The first day it ran like new, the 2nd day it's sputtering, barely ideling and bleching black smoke, and when i took it down the highway at one point it was shooting flames. I did notice the fuel line when i touch it feels as if it's surging. I tested the peacock it's fine, the carb just got rejetted at the start of the summer, and i exposed the air/fuel mixture adjustment and moved it no help there.  It gets worse as i give it more throttle. Please help i miss riding!  :'(

If you're sure it's not the petcock, really sure...... you're gonna' have to open up the carb again...
Check that the needle jet slide is moving smoothly, and check the float level and float needle and seat.....
Also,... make sure you put the brass washer under the main jet when you changed it....

With the peacock i pulled the hose off and plug it and the carb and it didn't run any better and that was pulled from a thread on here is there any other way?

If the petcock is working properly and in the "run" position, when you pulled the vacuum hose off the petcock should have stopped fuel flow, so the engine should not have run at all.  It should only run in the "prime" position when the vac hose of off.
Since it did run with the vac hose off, then that indicates there is something wrong with the petcock.  Have you tried running in the prime position with the vac hose off ?

SilvrDragon,
If you find out what's making it shoot flames, let us know. That would be so cool when leaving a redlight.  Boofer

Yeah it's running SUPER rich the inside of my muffler looks like it has been black powder coated. I ordered a raptor peacock just in case the bike's not staring anymore to check on the peacock again  >:(

Another way is to just do the petcock mod.  Make it a manual instead of the god-awful vac one.  I would have spelled vacum...but I don't remember how. ;)

Now, does the bike run with the PETCOCK in the PRI (prime) position?  If so, the petcock has a vacuum problem.
