Title: Battery Suggestions
Post by Mattdw on 08/28/09 at 08:00:48

Looks like a lot of my electrical issues may be a battery that's about to be toast.
Any suggestions on a very good, dependable battery that can withstand full discharge and charge conditions?
In other words, a battery that is much less maintenance than the good-ole water variety?

You will probably need to flatten the ears on your cables, as the Big Crank terminals are a bit larger than the stock battery.

Cross references to the same one for about $25-30 bucks less. I'm betting it is the same...looking at the pic.

Years ago I got a great Napa battery from the local Napa for about 45 bucks. Then I saw the Big Crank was only 50+. Got Big cranks on all three of my rides now. One has been in since 2005; never disconnected them in the winter (ride usually March till November ish) and never had a problem.

Looks to me the batteries are opposite what we need.

because of the location and accessabilty regardless of the battery used it is advisable to connect a pigtail to the battery that can easily be connected to a battery charger.

It don't matter how good a battery is. If their sitting around 1/2 dead much of the time, even the AGMs are going to have a shorter life. And if they are run stone dead very many times, their longivity will be greatly affected too. During the off season, I am a firm believer of a good maintainer float type charger stay connected all the time.

Yes, I am a self made expert,.....thru many moons of experience :)

Batteries last longer if they are charged then left along for the winter.

I was disappointed in FEB of 04 when I ordered what I thought was supposed to be a sealed Yuasa battery for my bike (see signature) online.  It ended up being an Interstate brand battery.  "OK, fair enough," said I.  The price was certainly right.

Anyway, 5 1/2 years later (last week), I load tested this battery.  It passed with flying colors (11% higher voltage than required).

I'm now very happy with that Interstate sealed battery and can recommend it.

Interstate is just a battery marketer.  Their auto batteries are made by Johnson Controls, their deep cycle are made by U.S. Battery, and their small batteries might indeed be made by Yuasa.

The general rule for battery storage is to either connect an automatic charger if in storage for a month, or to connect a manual charger one day a month.  As always, keep the electrolyte level in range by adding distilled water as needed.  A trickle charger in the 1 amp range is good, and no more than 2 amps if the battery needs a full charge.  Allowing a battery to discharge shortens its life, and in winter, allows it to freeze if cold enough.  A discharged battery freezes easily.  A fully charged lead acid battery freezes at -65°F.
My current favorite trickle charger (http://www.batterystuff.com/battery-chargers/brands/soneil/SON1202cc.html), Soniel 12v 1 amp Constant Current Charger.
