Title: Carburetor spacer...increase horsepower? Post by JohnBoy on 08/27/09 at 14:43:03 Greetings all, I'm looking for a little feedback from the hotrod crowd. I saw a recent article in carcraft magazine critiquing a carburetor spacer built by Wilson manifolds of Lauderdale, FL. The spacer was about one inch thick, and sat between the carburetor and the manifold. The idea was that the additional space allowed the fuel/air mixture to transition more smoothly into the intake port. The claimed increase was eleven horsepower (on an engine already producing 466). The question is, would such a spacer improve horsepower in a single like ours? JB |

But, that was placed between the air cleaner and the carb. I am wondering if anyone has experimented with placing a spacer between the carb and the head? There are few single cylinder street bikes left, and many performance bikes are moving to fuel injection. Perhaps some of the dirt bike magazines would be the place for me to ask this question. Thank you for your insite. |

Post by LANCER on 08/28/09 at 03:49:04 For all out power, intakes should be as straight a shot into the intake port as possible, which on this engine would be difficult with the space limitations but spacer tubes could be put in there if the air box is removed. With a velocity stack + carb + tube spacer+flange you could have a pretty good length of intake track. To take advantage of the total length you would need to take care that the ID of the total length is the same all the way through, or decreases slightly from end to end, AND THAT IT IS SMOOTH INSIDE. Abrupt changes in the ID leaves shoulders in there that will interfere with air flow. No one makes parts for this engine so you have to play mix and match. I get parts from auto parts stores, Lowes plumbing dept, local hardware store, leftover satelite dish mounting tubes ...whatever will fit. It is fun to play with. |

Post by klx650sm2002 on 08/28/09 at 05:34:26 Hey Johnboy For a start if you get the same percentage gain on the savage as the V8 you will get 0.6bhp. If you are looking for more inlet length I think the best thing is to add length to the filter side (as Lancer has done), moving the carb away from the head gives more chance of fuel dropping out of suspension. I think the spacer mentioned is an open one which adds volume to the plenum under the carb (or creates a plenum) which gains top end on a V8 by letting each cylinder "see" all the carb, just a thought Clive W :) |
