Title: Header Leak
Post by NDBiker on 08/27/09 at 11:39:25

I noticed oil on my fins under my header.  The oil looks old a gunky likes a slow leak.  But it's a leak non the less.  Any idea what could cause it?  I'm hopeing just a gasket.

Really?  The oil is not where the picture in that post is.  It's directly under the header.

Is it a,
"I have to fix it right now or It's going to ruin the bike?"
or
"Since I don't have the time and money at this particular time I can put it off till the end of the season as long as I don't do any hard riding."

let it go for as long as you want really. Just keep an eye on your oil level.

Keep a eye on you oil level - of course you should be doing that anyway - it might get a little messy but you can keep going - takes about 4 hours to fix it - I waited on the 1995 until it was bad enough to start splat'n oil all over the battey box.

a slow weep,... is just cosmetic...
No hurry....  ride 'till it bugs you enough to fix it....

ND,

Clean the area up real good with engine cleaner or something.

Then, after you've run the bike for a while, check the 12mm nut just below the exhaust pipe header (where the exhaust pipe exits the cylinder head at the front of the engine).  If you detect fresh oil hanging out on this nut, tighten it down to 16.5-18.5 ft-lbs.

I had the same leak a few years ago, tightening this nut stopped the leak.
