Title: Oldfeller's Savage was rear ended hard
Post by Oldfeller on 08/25/09 at 18:46:59

Bike was stationary, just sitting peacefully on it's side stand when a careless cager decided the parking space was empty and violently whipped their cage around the big truck next to me and smacked into my license plate holder and drove it straight into the rear tire, vaulted the entire bike forward off the side stand so hard it knocked the bike over, slid it across the pavement and jammed it into the facing curb.

license plate holder
license plate itself
sheet metal bracket that is part of the fender assembly is twisted/torn/bent
kickstand is sprung, won't stay extended reliably any more
LH mirror
LH handgrip
LH turn signals front & back
LH footpeg snapped off
LH saddle bag scrubbed and abraded
triple tree is twisted / front tire orientation off axis
rear tire is strongly cocked on axle (bent rim/bent axle -- dunno yet)

Cager arsehole got out, put the bike back upright in approximately the same location then skedaddled without leaving any notification or information.    A parking lot hit and run, in other words.

Cops classify it as a "parking lot fender bender" on their paperwork, but the damage to the bike was significant, especially if alignment/triple tree/frame has been affected.

Now here is the last part of the pisser -- I had a minor spill getting it home because the license bracket wouldn't stay pulled out away from the tire and when I stopped to pull it back out the side stand folded up while I was trying to get off the bike to fix it.

I went down to the left side and banged up my left knee (my bad knee) again.

Gimp again.

sheeeit ....

My Savage is up on the lift, dangling in the air until my knee gets better.

Who has a stock Suzuki main rider foot peg sitting around drawing dust?   Mine is toast.

Man, I'm sorry about that BS. Even when I screw up, I at least own up to it. Got rear ended in my van a few years back by a real cutie. Cop on a bike told me NOT to call my insurance company, that I could sue in small claims. She had no insurance. I told him that I never met a lawyer on a cop bike. Write faster, I'm missing my tee time. I knew the cop's boss ( a ham radio friend) and raised much sh!t over that.
Hang in there OF. The whole world ain't rotten.

That thar is a great idea Justin.

Very sorry to hear about your knee and your bike Oldfeller.
That is seriously messed up.
I hope there is some evidence that can get you some compensation for your ride. Even better if they pay up for a newer knee.

Wishing you the best.

Oldfeller,

I have a set of foot pegs that I replaced on my bike.  They are just sitting on the shelf.  If you want them, I will send them to you  for the cost of postage.  (Send me an email with you mailing information.) Sorry about the accident.  I had the same thing happen to one of my bikes, only it was parked in the space in front of my condo at the time.
Jerry

sorry to hear of the Savage carnage, that is a bummer; and smackin your knee to boot ... where is dirty harry when you need him ?  The 44 magnum may not be the most powerful hand gun in the world any more, but it would probably do the job anyway....shootin his wheels right off the car that is ... ya know its a dude doing the driving on this cause no girl is going to pick the bike up and reposition it like that.

Remember fellas, always park to the rear of the spot if you have to use one.  It's like ridin', if they can't see you, their run you over before they know it.  park so they can see your tail light, inline with the rest of the dinosaurs.

Oldfeller,

So sorry for your troubles.  That really sucks.  Some people have absolutely no personal integrity.  I could never do such a thing.

You've done much for this forum and I for one would like to return the favor.  I have a bunch of stock parts from my rebuild.  Post what you need and anything I can provide I'll ship to you free of charge.

Gary

Edit:  Just checked and I have stock footpegs, stock mirror, and stock turn signals.  They are in good, but not mint condition.  Your welcome to any of it.  Just let me know.

if your rear wheel (as opposed to bent axle) is messed up I've got a spare. Has a good tire ( dunlop 401 I think. Maybe 404.) on it but its very near replacement time. Unfortunate as your situation is, and I do sympathize as far as Im able, I can't let it go for nothing. $40 and shipping. No brake hub. Does include the pulley if you need it. And as a bonus, although I cant really afford to let it go for nothing, I tend to lose checks ( ask diamond jim. Sold him a rear shock, lost the check and he got it for free all said and done) ...anyway...

I don't have much in the way of spares, but let me know.  However, I am fresh out of spare knees.  :)

That really sucks Oldfeller. Hope you have a speedy knee recovery.
I also hope you can track that SOB down and at least get paid for the bike repairs.

The anti motorcycle cop should not have added his obviously biased opinion of the damage. The guy who hit the bike owes you for the total value of the bike.

'Specially the knee -- those new ones just ain't as good as a good original!  (Though they can be better than a trashed natural one.)

Thanks for all the offers of spare bits and pieces, guys.   Right now I am still too hobbly to get out in the garage to mess with it to sort out what can be fixed and what must be switched out.

I will be in touch with those that have offered their old bits when I get to the take it apart and look at it stage.

Thanks again,

Oldfeller

And if there's a place on your bike that picked up some of the car's paint, hang on to it -- you may need it for proof.

He hit the rear wheel so hard he would have driven the sissy bar upright right into my spine (breaking me in two about midway up my spine) before spreading me out over his hood and windshield.

Yeah, I already thought about that.  I'd rather be gimp for a while rather than paralyzed from the waist down.

===========

I got some parts coming from the folks above so I am likely good to go when they get here.  Only supposition to that comes from the rear wheel and swingarm / frame -- I am making the assumption I can repair / straighten these items at this point in time.   At least I am going to try to anyway as changing them out would be a WHOLE LOT of work.

Got any pictures of the mess?

Title: Re: Oldfeller's Savage was rear ended hard
Post by Oldfeller on 09/03/09 at 07:35:08

Nope, I just went to work fixing things.  I never take pictures when I am seriously working on something -- I'm busy.

Got the rear fender bending damage straightened up with only one little spot that shows a crinkle in the paint.

Thanks to GaryOnASavage and his USPS box of spare parts (thanks again Gary !!) I have mirrors, turn signals and footpegs again.  That was a big kindness that avoided a lot of dollars sent to Bike Bandit.

I fixed the crushed saddlebag with a piece of thin aluminum followed by wetting them good then and stuffing them full and letting them dry out and get stiff in the correct shape.  Bags are "formed" correctly again with the epoxied aluminum piece holding the back of the bag out from the bike correctly again.

My rear wheel is still slightly warped and I cannot spoke tune all of it out.  It is "good enough to use" but not perfect by any means.  More fiddling is needed here.

The remaining puzzlement is frame and tracking related.   I may start a thread up on this one as the root cause isn't clear and it results in high speed wobble which is serious enough that if I can figure out how to fix it maybe the knowledge should be preserved.

Thanks again Gary !!

Oldfeller

It was a pleasure helping out.  Those parts were just sitting around collecting dust and was glad they could go to a good cause.  Just sorry they weren't in a prettier state.  I hope you could polish them up alright.
