Title: noisy decel at highway speeds
Post by drums1 on 08/24/09 at 09:11:07

When I let off throttle at highway speeds, it pops, gurgles, almost sounds like it's running in reverse. Like a semi truck using jake brakes. My mixture screw is froze up at 1 1/2 turns out and there is a minor exhaust leak, but those things have been that way for over 1 year. My new problem has just popped up in the last month or so. With last years head replacement fiasco, I also had the timing chain tension adjuster thing replaced with the new upgraded version. Only 14,000 miles on bike. I just changed oil and spark plug. Also, bike has lot's of vibration. (see other post) I thought maybe the timing was off, but it seems to run ok other than the vibration and the jake brake noise on decel. Any idea's??

I love my jake brake noise! Or an air compressor noise. Seriously now, it's supposed to sound like that, a 650cc single, what else? Or I'm missing something.

Sounds like your minor exhaust leak got a bit bigger...

Ineclipse has a gutted jardine muffler on his and he's louder than semis using thier jake brake. Its pretty amazing. If we're passing a semi he'll chop the throttle back for a second once we get up to the cab and the truck slows down every time. The sound is hilariously terribly loud. I imagine the driver thinks something just broke until he sees us speed past.

You can't get rid of all the gurgling and popping (why would you?) but if you increase your idle speed it will help.

Mine confuses road crews with pickhammers, hehehe. Roll off the throttle and they start looking at the compressor, confused. Who the hell started this now??? +1 on the idle speed.

OK apparently that's normal so I'll quit worrying about that and concentrate more on the vibration. Thanks guys.
