Title: Corroded wheel fixes?
Post by voldigicam on 08/22/09 at 07:15:12

The galvanized spokes & the nipples show some ugly from corrosion.  Don't think that stuff polishes . . .

Thinking about pulling the wheels off, prepping, masking, and painting the hubs/spokes/nipples in black.  Would do the lower parts of the fork and the engine side casings at the same time, replace all corroded fastners, and patch all other paint.  Would spiff up the bike a bunch.

Wish this thing had alloy tubeless wheels, but there you go!

What is the saying, wish in one hand ....

I don't know the saying.  Perhaps being more direct would be useful.

I'll tear the bike down this winter, get the engine sides powder coated black, same for the alloy bottoms of the fork, patch the paint on frame & elsewhere.  Fit stainless allen bolts everywhere, or at least replace all the corroded fastners.  And hand spray the wheels.  That should look very nice. I've had bicycles with black hubs & spokes.  Maybe I'll de-badge, too.

I would powdercoat the wheel as well.
Knock the bearings out and mask off the hub and rim. And they can get it from there. The amount you are powdercoating the wheel aint but a drop in that bucket.
Cool.

I can ask about the wheel coating, too.  Thanks. I don't know powdercoating technology.  I'm tempted to do the fenders, tank, side panels, and fork in either lime green or maximum yellow.  But that would be real work!

cast wheels are doable and have been done by a few with me being one of them. After having finally gotten spacing right Im tickled pink to be forever free of tubes. And they look bada$$ especially if you're going to bob or rat. GS450 wheels seem to be THE choice so far, though my good friend Ineclipse intends to try his luck with Kawi EN 454 wheels this winter.
