Title: brake, tire wear and oil usage
Post by presquile on 08/21/09 at 13:03:00

I bought an 07 with 6000 km on it. Now it has 12000 km on it. Ive changed the oil to amzoil 10- 40. but I'm wondering about 3 things:

1. I had to add about a quarter of a quart to it today
2. Looks like i need new front brake pads...down to the metal
3. The bike shop says that come spring, I'll need a new back tire...cant ride in the winter in Canada...there is still tread on it, and is the factory supplied tire. I'm thinking of Pirellis or Avons....

I normally do freeway and town riding, maybe an hour or so a day

Is this wear or oil usage normal? I'd appreciate any feedback on this...thanx

1 km is ~5/8 of a mile
1 mile is ~ 1.6 km

That sound average for 8000 miles,That rear tire as to be bald if the thats the one that come on it.Thats good oil and both brand of tires are at the top.

here we usually, as a rough guide, divide the km by 6 to give mileage...

The rear tire not bald, about 1/4 tread left on it....but the front tire is in better shape

It just seems to be a lot of wear....on my old bike i never had to add oil.

Just wondering

thanx for answering

EBC (brand) FA106 (catalog number) brake pads get good reviews.  Note that these do not have a suffix.  You might have to get these from a non-Suzuki shop.

I like my Pirelli MT66 Route tires very much--much better than the original IRC tires.  The 140/90-15 is the size Pirelli recommends for our bikes (because they don't make a 140/80-15).  Mine fit with no trouble.  Some people report that they need to put bolts under the fenders with flatter heads for clearance with this tire.

I'm at 8K miles and I just changed my front pads to those EBC pads. Very easy job and they work great. My back tire is shot and I need a new one. I've never had any oil losse but I have read on here that it is normal. I use regular old 10W40 dino oil.

Running a D404  140/90/15 on the back and had to shave the boltheads to clear because i have the saddlebag supports. Without those it would fit fine. No oil consumption between 2500 miler oilchanges. Now at 12000. 15W40 synthetic.

FYI, I was able to pick up some EBC front pads for 10 bucks on eBay new.   For the bang for the buck I've run Dunlops, but we have a factory here in Buffalo, so maybe that's why the price is better. *shrug* I have over 11k miles on my rear (two years; not much riding in the winter either) and it still passed inspection. About a little over a third tread left.

??? Man, I hope you you divide by one-point-six. 1.6. If you divide by six (6) you are way off. As in 5-times-less off.

On my fourth rear and I think second front at 20K. Dunlop D404 rear and bridgestone front. Must be all the wheelies keeping the front freash! ::)

sorry, i meant we multiply km by 6, then move the point to the left....

so 100 km X 6=600. Move the point to the left...then it is 60 mph

And thanks  for all the advice
