Title: New owner-some questions
Post by K-Kustom on 08/20/09 at 18:37:06

Hello, I am new to this forum, looks like a nice place. Just bought
a 2001 Savage or really traded a set of wheels and tires for it.. ;)ha

Got it for my boy as a custom project we can work on together, but
I think I have fallen in love with this bike myself also.

Building a bobber type bike.

Here are some of the questions I have come up with SO  FAR..

Has anyone put a 170-80-15 on the back here? Looks like it will be
close. We are removing the rear footpegs and mounts so the clearance on that side is OK..Will be close to the belt.  As anyone trying to find a wider rim for a 15" for 36 spokes has found it is hard,
I am hoping the rim will fit the bigger tire..May go with a 160-80-15??

Question 2. are the spokes Stainless or Coated as I want to polish
them? Have polished coated spokes before and that turns out not so well, as they rust easier from then on..ha :-?
                                             thanks, Keith

I think the biggest anyone has put on is a 160.
You can certainly put on a 150.
But look at the dark side tread, or car tire for some tips on what to clear away before you do.  You'll need to replace most on the bolts on the sides with truss head bolts.  Or you gonna cut some new grooves in the tire.   :o

verslagen1 thanks for the reply..your answer sent me out to the shop
with calipers in hand. and did some measuring.

Yeah, I think a 170 may be pushing the limits. If it lays 170 which it may not with this narrow of a rim. it only leaves me with 1mm from
the belt(where it sits now may be out of alighnment for all I know @
this point)

It will also be taller making it to close to the right side of the swing
arm maybe for my swingarm mounted fender. Of corse I could shorten
the front (bottom) of the fender and mount it above the cross on the
swingarm.

Thanks for the reply as it really got me thinking.
I think I will use the 160 & that will be wide and tall enough.

p.s. no bolts in the way, sorry to say to the purists as the first 2 tools
we've used on this build were a socket set, and more importantly a
cutt-off wheel ;)
                           thanks again..

Search around the site for the 160 and you might be able to do better, just going to take some effort.

Someone mentioned a rim/wheel that might fit... intruder or maurader or something like that.  It's a wider rim anyhow.

And you can gain some room by going to a chain conversion.

The spokes are a real bummer on these bikes. No idea what they are, but not polishing is a bad idea, I know, & polishing is not easy task & results were lackluster, & I mean that in every way.

Welcome to the forum.  I have no experience with an oversize rear tire.  I do know that with my Dunlop 140-80-15, the bolt heads holding the bag supports scrape on the side of the tire when I ride double.

Wow..Thanks for all the replys..Was amazed today when I read them all..Funny thing is I put in search; fat tire, big tire, bigger tire, and everything I could think of and didn't get any of the cool links that you
guys put on here...tnx mch.

Still thinking I will go with the 160-80-15, but thanks to your help will
locate the wider rim as it sounds like what I need. Im 49 yrs old and
been building HotRods all my life.(building a 41 Willys coupe right now)
but the last bike I built was over 20 yrs ago, so I am pretty rusty at
the bikes and the help is good...Painted a few lately, but that is it...

On the spokes, yeah guess I will give them a try as metal polishing is
a second nature to me. If they don't work out, been looking at
Buchanan spokes on the net..Stainless with stainless nipples (nuts).
Check them out they make "twisteds" and all.

Also been working on the mold for the rear fender some, but need to buy
the tire before I set the arc. :(   Not been a lot of extra cash growin on
the tree lately...
                                  thanks again all, Keith

The spokes are really looking bad [ugly] on my 06.... but that's Maui for you! Everything rusts or gets salt-pitted.

When a new tire is needed, I want to go with a mag wheel. I just don't trust spokes not to break on me at the worse time....

Anyone put on mags? What kind?

You need to set the "This post was made..." Field to all posts.

In the tech section under modifications, third one down is "how to fit a much bigger rear tire" or something similiar. May help.
