Here are some pics and a video of the new muffler. Its an Emgo short <a href="http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/emgo_muffler.htm">reverse cone</a>. I got it from Cycle Recycle in Indianapolis - nice group of guys and very easy to work with. They've got a million used parts in their shop, so if you're looking for something you can get in touch with them and see if they've got it.

This is an '86 and I got it with very low miles. The previous owner said he did the white spacer mod and I only got backfires when I turned the bike off. These were mostly quiet little "puffs". The header was a bit yellow when I bought it - I've put a thousand or so more miles on it and that has deepened to what you see in the pics. What is that from?

I took her for quick test ride yesterday after getting the muffler installed. Its MUCH louder than stock, but has a nice, throaty growl to it. It'll take some getting used to but I'm loving it so far. No back-fires except on shut-down as before. Power-wise, I haven't noticed any significant changes. It feels like its maybe lost a little bit throughout all gears, but most markedly when I'm in 4th. It doesn't feel like it has the same roll-on power that it had before. I always shifted by the sound of the engine though, so some of this change may be me reacting differently to the sound & volume of the pipe. The muffler is much less restrictive than the stock. I really don't know where to begin with rejetting the carb. Hopefully tomorrow will be dry and I can go out for a WOT test. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Since it's very loud and noticeably a little weaker,... I'd go up two on the main and one on the pilot...
152/52 I think....then see where you are from there...

I looked at the Dunstall replica Emgo offers, but Bill said it would require some modification to make it fit as it hit the brake lever. Its the 17" reverse cone on the link.

Would you recommend just springing for a jet-kit? And do you know if the kits that work for the 2000 and up models would work for an 86? The dealership wasn't sure.

Personally,.. I wouldn't bother with a jet kit... but I didn't realize you had an 86', sorry I missed that....
Your stock jets on an 86' are #155 main, #47.5 pilot, and your needle jet should be adjustable to three positions by a c-clip..

The #155 main should be big enough, it's much richer than a newer model Savage, so I would try #50 or a #52 pilot, and just reset your needle jet clip one position up....

Best way to get the right type of pilot jet is to take your old one into the shop and they can match it with a size bigger... Mikuni makes a bunch of different pilots.... should cost $6.00 or so..

How much did that pipe set you back? Looks and sounds good but I think I'm still gonna try and get a used Dyna when the time comes.

Yeah, I'm really starting to dig the sound. And the volume. I was never really one for loud pipes, but this is converting me.

I'm in the Indy area. It only cost about $50 with tax.

That's a pretty sweet deal. What side of Indy are you from? I live in the southwest corner of Marion County. You think your going to need to re-jet the carb now? I'm still stuck wanting the dyna muff I think.

I'm kind of near downtown.

I've had the chance to ride it a couple of more times and I'm not really sure I'll need to re-jet at this point. I may need to do some adjustment, but it feels like its got more power now that I've gotten used to the new sound. I still need to run it out to a hill to do the WOT test. I'll keep you posted.
