Title: Bike will stall at randum
Post by cdub on 08/18/09 at 07:56:11

I hope some one can help me with this. My wife has a 1996 Savage and the bike will stall at randum. When it does this it does not like to stay running unles you give it gas. The carb was rebuilt last year, new plug this year and a new air filter. The wierd thing is that it will not happen on every ride! She could go for a week befor it will do it. I have checked ovet the bike and can't find anything wrong with it. Please help, she now wants to sell it if i can't fix it.

Put the petcock on prime to ride and on when shut off.
Or try reserve.

If that solves the issue than it's the petcock.  Either the vac line has gone bad or the diaphram.  If the hose is cracked or loose at all the petcock shuts off.

The permanet fix is to replace or go manual.

That was happening to my 2004.
I ran about three inches of brass tubing into the open end of both vacuum lines...to preven them from closing up. So far (knocking wood) the problem has not come back
total cost less than three dollars and totally reversable.

If nothing else works, crimp the petcock's vacuum tube completely closed and run it in PRI.

If that solves your problem, you need to mod or replace the petcock.
