Title: Neutral to 1st
Post by cursal on 08/17/09 at 08:18:27

So I was coming in after a nice ride in the hills and pull up at a 4 way intersection yesterday, down-shifted from third to 1st and  I was all set to pull forward when the light went green.

Thing is when I let out the clutch and rolled on the throttle I was, to my surprise, in neutral. Ok so I pull in the clutch and press the shifter down..nope..still in neutral. Let it out and tried again, stomping a littling harder..nothing..WTH?

I push it up into 2nd no problem, then press down again, but only goes as far as neutral. Then again, and THIS TIME it goes into 1st and I pull out through th light. Still for 10-15 secs (a long time with traffic sitting behind you) I was fussing with the gears.

When I got home I played with this in my driveway with the engine off.
Had the same trouble getting from neutral to first.

Is there something I'm missing?
What would cause this?
Am I not doing something I should be?
My ride info in my sig.

Thanks

Hey cursal, this question belongs in rubber side down. Moderators?

Good luck with the problem!

You'll find from time to time shifting can be knotchy.
apply pressure to the shifter in the direction you want to go before pulling the clutch most times will help.  Pull the clutch and allow the foot to fall/rise.

Another thing that helps is to shift while the bike is still moving.  It can be really a bear to shift when the wheels aren't turning.

If you DO get caught stopped in the wrong gear and can't shift do NOT, repeat NOT, mash on the shifter!!  As verslagen said, put some pressure on the shifter the way you want it to go, then ease the clutch out just a bit.  (Make sure you have the brakes on!).  The bike will shift without moving.  Repeat as needed to get in the correct gear.

**Got it : NEVER MASH THE SHIFTER** ;)

Get it in gear while the wheels are still moving whenever possible.
Apply gentle pressure in direction (up/down) before pulling in clutch.

Thank you
