have 2009 changed oil yesterday (500 miles) now have a leak from what appears the drain plug area. am sure i tightened the plug enough. has anyone else experienced this. what did i do wrong?

Did you put the washer on?.... between the plug and the hole?

If you did,.. wipe it clean down there, and give it an hour or two... if it still leaks, tighten it a little harder...

did not notice the washer. suspect that is the problem. will pick up a new one at the stellership tomorrow ($2.35) what a rip off. will change oil again and just consider the change and engine flush.

Just catch the oil, and pour it back in...

Most auto parts stores sell oil drain plug gaskets in all the various metric and fractional sizes in aluminum, copper, fiber, and plastic. If you get the diameter of the threads of your drain plug, you can get the gasket. I'd choose fiber or plastic for a plug in an aluminum casing

Whenever I get a leaky drain plug on cars, bikes or anything else, I just unscrew the drain plug about 3 turns and take some teflon tape give it two wraps and retighten the plug. Works everytime. No teflon tape - some cotton kite string is a good substitute.
HINT - take the teflon tape and spin it in your fingers to make a teflon string. Easier to wrap around plug.
You are not sealing the plug threads, you are just adding material to the flange gasket area.

I had some dirt/gravel/debris on a plug once that leaked. Even though I didn't notice, it musta got dirty before I screwed it back in and that much did the trick. A slow seap, rather. The washer, though, is more likely. :)

As long as we are talking oil...anybody got a NAPA or Fram part number for a Savage oil filter replacement?

On some motorcycles the oil plug gasket seems to have a habit of staying on the crankcase instead of coming off with the plug. Then it falls into the pan into which you are collecting the oil. You then, not noticing the missing gasket, replace the plug and refill the oil. Only when you pour the used oil into whatever collection receptacle you use do you notice the gasket.

I know that WIX/NAPA lists the wrong filter. They list a spin-on filter, not the canister filter we have.

Hiflo has a good one, HF137, for about $7, probably special order, at any non-Suzuki cycle shop. Their air filter, HFA3608, about $15, is a good choice as well.

Suzuki oil filter rated right at the top so why take a chance on something else,A lot of times saving a little money cost more in the long run.

I did find a Suzuki filter so I got that one for 7.95.
in the mean time I found some additional info:

OEM Suzuki filter (part number 16510-37450)
Height: (36 mm)
Outside Diameter: (60 mm)

installed new drain plug seal and added teflon tape (yellow) to threads problem solved.

Sounds like the stealer gonna keep sticking me on that one.

I only change the filter ever other time. I always take it out and look at it though. Just to see if I see any solid matter in it or rips or punctures since I'm going to be going another cycle on the old filter. And use a rag to get out any old oil in the socket as well.
