It looks like the guy that had it before me had cut it, then welded a piece of metal to elongate it, probably when he extended the forward controls.
Any ideas if I can get another one the right length, or if I'll have to have one made. And, no...I don't know the length at this moment. Bike isn't home. >:( :-[

could measure the two halves and ask Ed L here to make you a new link rod. He makes forward controls for a lot of people here and includes longer link rods. Otherwise you'll probably have to have someone else make one or ditch the forwards and buy a new stock length one from bikebandit or some such place.

Well that sucks, you'd think such a simple, low-load part of the bike would hold together.. ::) Anyway, a good welder should be able to weld it up stronger than before. If the previous owner used an alloy that's too brittle or doesn't stick well to the stock shift rod, a more experienced welder should be able to replace the extension with the right metal. Of course the length doesn't have to be exactly the same as before, because you have the adjusting threads. No harm in over-threading and trimming it down later. If you have one made, make sure your machinist is aware of the reverse threads on one end of the rod (the forward end I think) or have Ed L do it.

If you were happy with the feel of the old rod, just get it welded. If you need to get it home, go wrap it with & wire it & glue it together & get it home, then clean it up & have it welded.Some kind of Splint wired on or even epoxied with 5 minute stuff should get you down the road a while, Thats temporary, welding should never be temporary,
