Title: Swap 4 to 5 speed ?
Post by mikestrikes on 08/07/09 at 17:07:31

Sooo I am about to do a search and read up on this, but just to put it out here if nothing but just to swap it out, I want the 4 speed, my 96 has a 5 speed right ?
Its in very good condition...

I'll trade for a real nice 4 speed AND a 14 tooth sprocket !

OK off to read and learn !

I'm sure you'll find it in your search, but the answer is no.
It's been discussed to death. Even by me LOL

You wanta swap the whole engine right?

Been a few discussions as to why you can't swap the tranny.

When you swap engines, be sure to swap CDI's too

and check the electrical connections before you wander off into the sunset/moonrise.

I know you cant make a 5 speed out of a 4 speed, but Why make a 4 out of a 5? The 4 speed is supposed to have a higher top end, but with the trike load on the engine, maybe the lower gearing offered by the 5 speed top gear would be easier on it?

Mike, I've had an idea for a long time and maybe your the guy to proove it out.

Can you take the 3rd gear set, swap driven for driving and put it in for 5th gear?

The gear ratio would be about right for an 1000 rpm gear change from 4th to 5th.

Looking at it I'm lost, just because its the 3rd gear set doesn't mean its 3rd gear.. doesn't 1st gear stay meshed and that turns the shafts, then the forks push others together to make the others mesh and work...

Am I wrong ?

Looking at the 3rd set of gears they wont swap out with the 5th set of gears as they have a diff type of dogs...

Show me a pic of what you are referring to...

From what I'm seeing the answer is NO...

Looking at the picture, swapping and reversing the gear set for 2nd for the 5th would be best, if the dogs were the same.

Last line is if 3rd swaped drive for driven.

Which ever pair of gears correspond to 3rd, that's the ones.

Now this would mean you need to get a second set of 3rd's,
and put it in place of 5th.

I cant see how any of the gears can be swaped to any place, they are all a little diff with the dogs and shift fork grooves !

I have taking them apart and try'd 3 times and dont see it happing.

Would need to find someone with a CNC Mill and make a set ?  ::)

they are all a little diff with the dogs and shift fork grooves !
Which could be helpful if a guy had all that apart.

I don't understand why the set for 3rd should be applied. That would make it shorter and higher revving than before.

N stands for number of teeth.

I know, it still would be shorter geared than OEM. I thought the point was to make it geared longer?

The ratio of the stock 5th is 1.13
The proposed 5th is 1.14
For comparison, stock 4th is 1.05

This is why I wanted the 4 speed. I wont be doing any HWY rides over 10 or so miles, just around town at low speeds, so I wanted less gears to mess with... Hmmm I wonder if I cant just remove 5th gear...

Let me see !

you could just ignore 5th gear. Its pretty much useless anyway.

I know, but I hate having something just hanging out when its not of much use... I will be looking more into blocking it out.... may grind the teeth off of one and add a flapper to the other to sling oil around better, kinda like the connecting rod in a Briggs motor !

I dont know yet.... looks like I will be replacing the bearings while I'm in it.... it set so long the bearings have pits in the lower curves of them and when cleaned and you roll them, they catch a little in spots, not totally smooth rolling ya know... I'll see how much they cost, may even up grade if I can ?

4th will get you up to 75 mph at 5500 rpm.
But I wouldn't disable it, you never know when you might want it.
And the 4 speed will get you up to the same speed as the 5 speed.
So what are you saving by disabling it?  Nothing.
What are you loosing it? The right gear for cruising on the freeway.
