Title: Stupid Human Tricks after a Long Ride
Post by David Levi on 08/05/09 at 13:29:03

Hi All, One thing I have noticed in the last year and three months I have owned this 07, is that after a long ride I do incredibly stupid (bleep). For intstance, after my first long ride last summer, and also the first time I rode at 60+ for over an 3 hours, I pulled up to get gas station, turned off the bike, took off my helmet and gloves, pulled out my wallet and credit card, then got off the bike. Anyone see what's missing? Plunk.

Today I did a similar ride, 4 hours on country roads, got back into the city and pulled under a bridge for a smoke. I think it took me 5 minutes to get the bike started back up because of the combination kill switch, kick stand, neutral. I was completely brain dead. This is a common startup hiccup, 2 seconds maybe, but 5 minutes? Duh.  :D

Am I alone on this or you guys experience it too?

Plus, I need to do the seat mod. My arse, I can't feel my arse...

darn 4 hours, how big is your tank?

I haven't been riding enough to comment on the long trip runs, but I get tricked by the kick stand/first gear once a week at least.

I too need a better seat, or at least the seat mod.  A 40 minute trip last night and my tail bone was killing me.

Well, I have to admit the most embarrassing thing I've done was forget to put on my helmet (helmets mandatory in NJ). Took me, oh I don't know, maybe 5-10 miles on the highway, another 5 on local roads until I stopped at a light and went to check my hair tie. It took me that long to notice that I didn't have a helmet on my head. Luckily, it was still strapped to the lock although a bit beat up. I was wondering why that guy on the touring bike sitting at a light was looking at me kind of funny as I rode by.

Lesson learned; don't use the bike's helmet lock while working and riding from job to job all over the county, and, most importantly, focus on riding first, not getting to the next job.

I rode for an hour on yesterday's tank then stopped in West Jeff for a fill up. I guess I should say the ride was four hours total, it does take a little bit to get out of the city limits. Columbus seem a lot smaller these days since I got this thing though.

1st thing that has to be watched for in these summer months is dehydration.  And there's also boredom from riding at 25 mph for 4 hours.  Put a grin on man, do 75, stop every hour to relax your grin muscles, fill up, pee and get a drink.  Yeeehaaa!   ;D

And if your seat is uncomfortable, fix your seat. Many ways of going about that ....do a search on seats and you'll find plenty of posts.Maybe Seat Mod or Seat fix, etc.

I think a painful/uncomfortable seat wears you out :(

Plus the heat! 2 bad combinations :)

I bought a nice/decent drink holder for a bicycle...was going to modify it to fit my handlebars but I think it might fit without modifying :-/
If I can ever find the darn right tool ,around the house, to get it apart, for attachment... ::)

That's my main problem....no tool organization :D

I too was having serious tailbone pain on any rider over about an hour.  Serowbot had a simple, and very effective fix. (I should have Serowbot post some pictures and an explanation.) I simply pulled back the seat cover a little, took a pair of tin snips, and cut a "V" out of the seat pan where my tailbone rides.  I didn't alter the foam, or anything else, and the seat looks totally stock, but my tailbone no longer aches when I ride. (Now the rest of my but is a different matter, and yes, I have the front of the seat raised about an inch and a half.)

Brain fade from time concentrating, heat, dehydration.  Very common.  Gets worse with age.  Friend of mine crashed his car - his limit is about 45 minutes in summer races, then he can tell he loses the edge.

I'm figuring about 45 minutes tops for rest breaks and brain check.  Take helmet off, make sure I'm really at the top of my game.

In bicycling, I've seen real bloppers first turn after topping a hill.  All that heat and so little wind.  Same effect happens with motorcycling, especially in the summer.  I can tell, my former pro rider brother in law mentions it, etc.

Brain fade.

So far I'm OK, but I talk to myself lots.

You aren't alone. After an hour or more riding I stop and I'm feeling pretty punched. I've forgotten the kickstand a couple of times but fortunately caught the bike before it fell.  :o

Could you have cut that from the bottom side without pulling back the seat cover

Dont forget to eat something...some type of real food.

The brain needs fuel also :)

I stopped at a cute little cafe while out on a ride with friends one day.All they wanted was dessert.
I hadnt eaten all day.I ate the dessert and thought I'd pass out...LOL.

It was a huge piece of hummingbird cake...and if you dont know what that is...well..
Its just mostly sugar  ::)  ...but awesome!

I get set just as for a bicycle ride.  A couple of water bottles with my usual mix in them, and some snacks.

The fluid is very important.  One thing I notice on the moto is that I can't really monitor my sweat loss very easily.  Seems to be surprisingly high in warm weather.  Chugging a bunch of fluid every once and a while isn't nearly as effective as a steady intake.

The more I look at motorcycling, the closer it looks to bicycling in mental and general physiological demands.  Except cornering is easier on a motorcycle.  And my bicycle is much higher performance.

Raising the seat up one to two inches helps a lot, just finished that mod.

Man...I'm glad I'm not the only one who's done this! ;D

can't say i ever dumped it at a gas station, but then again, i don't get off my bike at gas stations.

just pull up nice and close like to the pump and do all the work from there.

I do catch myself riding on auto-pilot early in the morning on my way to work. suddenly catching myself not paying attention to a turn, or potholes, or cagers, but especially not paying attention to speedlimits....

I hit a squirrel the other day.  I pulled over to help ease his pain.  I was going to leave my bike running, no big deal right back on, right?    I forgot that my bike was in gear when I got off.  When it jumped foreward I caught it just before it hit the ground.  WOW, did I feel stupid.  I just wanted to help the squirrel too bad I guess.  He didn't make it though    :-/

There is a reason pilots have checklists....

I've pulled enough dumb tricks to write a book, not all on a motorcycle.  Left saddlebags open more times than I can remember, loosing various articles.  Things not fastened after working on them.  Forgetting to shift down at lights.  Shifting down instead of up (that one is fun when your tired).  Side stands not down.  Side stands not up.  Switch not on.  Let clutch out thinking bike not running.  And one I've only done once...putting a full Dr Pepper with no lid in the cup holder on my bike.  First big bump, me and the bike are one big sticky.

I  like to play mind games while I'm doing long rides to keep the mind sharp.  Don't ride over 2 hours without a stop of some kind.  Food and drink is also top priority, along with physical comfort.  Being in a hurry can get you into real trouble as well.

Aw, Bill...I have a feeling that was no "Stupid Human Trick" on your part.  ;)

I was so fagged out after a long ride once that when I stopped for gas, I shoved my credit card into the gas pump's receipt slot.

I had to get an attendant to open the pump up so I could retrieve my credit card.   :-[

Thanks for the rest suggestions. I guess that is something I forget to do when I'm out at times. The cup holder is also a great idea. I think I might take on a seat modification this weekend for my tailbone issues.

The one about the guy leaving the wife at the gas station. Oh man, that rocks!  ;D

For cup holders... I bought a 4 pack of plastic ones that hook to a car side window from Walmart for $2.  Cut the hooks off of them and zip tied them to the handlebars/trippletree/windshield hardware.  Used 2 on both my bikes.  Large enough to hold a big gulp and useful to shove other stuff in (maps, papers, gloves) while riding.

Updated with pics.  Not that pretty, but functional.  No one really notices unless you get close.

A buddy of mine who rides a Honda VTX1300 bought a couple those sport bottles with holders that you attach to your bicycle and he mounted them to his wind shield brackets. If you didn't know any better, you would think it was a feature of the windshield.

Awesome ideas.... except I have no windshield.  If I tried to drink something while riding, I imagine hilarity would ensue! ;D

Get you one of those sports bottles with the squirt tip.  It can be done.

Would love to see this mod and how it works.  Raised the seat and took a 2 hour ride to get uncomfortable.  Anything that could help.

I don't yet really have any goofy stories like those. I have seen plenty go on though. I've even chased down people who left their gas caps sitting. Both on bikes and in cages. Which on our bike would be hard to do because they key opens it, but with my new tank it doesn't so I'm going to have to make sure not to pull the same whoops.

Yup, a lot of this has to do directly with the simplest of things:
DEHYDRATION.

Even mild dehydration can cause disorientation in a very big way.
A camelback backpack is a handy investment and a
GREAT back pillow in case of a fall (trust me on that one).

...priceless  ;)

There are some days when I'm alert and smooth and everything flows on the bike. Other days, not so much. It's important to recognize that you're not up to par, and maybe food, water and rest is required for a pick me up, or maybe, not ride at all.

Excellent advice. All I was thinking about was a night ride after coming home from work yesterday (worked 9-9) in 95F heat, included dragging my gear (15-20 lbs.)hundreds of yards on two beaches. I was drenched all day. Felt effects of heat exhaustion a couple of times. I got home completely wiped out by 9:30 and decided to lie down in the AC first. Even after an hour, I felt that I was running at maybe 50% and my riding skills would suffer. I stayed in. Sometimes it's better to admit that I would be better off not riding at all. Woke up at 10:00 today and still feel wiped.

When I first started riding again, an hour was a long time, particularly when I was practicing low speed control. I had been at it for about two hours on the little TW200 that I was using, and realised that I was just plain pooped, so I decided to head for home. I picked up my feet, and then for some reason did NOTHING ELSE -- no letting out of the clutch, no throttle -- NOTHING.  :o

As I was tipping to the left, the picture that flashed in my mind was that of the tricycle guy on the old "Laugh-In" show. I picked myself up, killed the motor, then looked around very carefully to see if anyone had been watching. No damage to anything other than my pride.  :-[
