Post by spacepirates on 08/03/09 at 13:37:36 On hard accel, occasionally and much to my dismay (because usually i have a reason for accelerating hard) my bike will drop out of 2nd gear and into neutral. This isn't me not shifting up high enough into 2nd, the bike gets going for half a second or so and then drops out. pisses me off when it happens, almost got caught between some mammoth SUV and a cement road-wall thing... is this the clutch not engaging fully and being forced out? or could the gear be messed up? |

From what I understand its a pretty common issue with 80's hondas but not something Ive heard of on the savage. Before you go tearing things apart from now on when you shift instead of "clutch, shift, release foot lever, release clutch" try keeping pressure on the shift lever until you let the clutch lever all the way back out. I've found myself mis-shifting lately. Up to nuetral but not all the way to first. If i keep pressure on the shift lever the whole way through the shift I dont have a problem. |

Post by spacepirates on 08/04/09 at 06:32:30 well, i've had my bike from about 5.5K to 12K+, and this is a recent development. not really sure how much time i should give it.... I'll try keeping pressure on the shifter. It'll take a while for me to remember to do that though... re-writing 10K+ (savage is my second bike) of shifting isn't going to be easy. |

If you ever had it off, it might not have gotten back to the original location. I know it affects shifting, might affect it staying in gear too. I'd pull the arm off of the case and slip it 1 or 2 splines lower and see how it goes. |

Post by spacepirates on 08/04/09 at 07:25:50 hm... i might have obfuscated what is happening. so, this isn't me being in second gear, cruising along happily and then the gear drops out. this is me accelerating hard, clicking into second gear, it engaging for a split second and then dripping out. i haven't had it happen with any other gear... You clutch and shift and stay on the shifter and it will click in ... that = perfect engagement. On my 48K GS 500, one time I missed a shift ~15K. I then did this perfect shift forever, and my transmission at the end of it, as checked out by the next owner was "like new". You may have to do it that way form now on kiddo. Cool. Srinath. |

Grab the clutch, slap the throttle closed & grab a gear? Ive had mine pop out a few times & Ive followed it up with a more concentrated effort to make a complete shift & it didnt keep happening. |
