Title: don't drag race....EVER!
Post by Rocco on 07/23/09 at 04:52:21

well folks...i did it..i'm an idiot!

my friend and i were leaving, he was in his bro's mustang which is not stock btw and we were next to each other @ a light. light turns green and he peals out and reaches 90 in an instant. i took off the same time he did but kept it to 50ish....

they pulled us both and said i was doing 65 in a 45...i was so tempted to say but officer i was in 4th gear and she doesn't go past 50 in 4th......but he didn't want to hear my plea. $266 "1/4 mile" ticket....great!

i try my best not to do stupid stuff, especially on 2 wheels but i guess the testosterone and mountain dew wouldn't let me be! so glad i don't have a sport bike and not sure if more power is what i need, for a while anyways  >:(

I live right near the "Dragon."  Which used to just be a road up in the mountains (there are better ones, but I'm not telling).  I have observed many near misses.  The cause is almost always overdriving one's ability and common sense.  Drag racing is the common sense aspect.  Someone else drives one to do stupid.

The other someone else problem is what I see on the Dragon.  Groups where the leader is (as usual) the best rider.  And one of the followers can't do the turn, ends up heading across the line or into the ditch/woods/rail.  That other person seems to have some people going outside of common sense or ability.

The drag racing instinct works great, though.  I've used it many times.  The adjacent fellow hassles one to race.  Stop at the light side by side. You rev your engine, he revs his.  Light changes, he takes off like mad.  You just accelerate normally, and the other fellow isn't around to hassle you.

If I get pissed/annoyed/provoked I pull over.   Must drive calm.  Essential.  No distractions.

Speaking of distractions - my cell phone in my tank bag set on vibrate actually sends very faint vibrations into the tank and I can feel them with my knees.  Worried me very much, this incredibly faint new vibration!  When I saw the missed call and recalled the position of the phone it made sense.  Another distraction to eliminate.

Racing is fine - on a track.  I've only done cars on a track.  It's a blast.  Out on the road I'm a speed limit and under paranoid driver.

Hummm doesn’t sound like you did anything terrible held the speed down and all except perhaps failed on the situational awareness.

I did the inverse of this about 35 years ago – a buddy of mine had just bought a new Gremlin X – bright red with a gold stripe – ugly maybe but the 304ci v8 in these tailless cars would in fact smoke the tires and move them along pretty good.

I was at a stop light when a souped VW with burbling exhaust pulled up beside me – being cool I didn’t look at the VW but when light changed it exhaust let loose so I dumped the clutch on the Gremlin X and banged second gear – about this time there were more flashing lights around us than a person could believe.

Turned out it wasn’t a souped VW beside me after all – it was 3 JCP motorcycle cops on Harleys. As they laughed their arse off they wrote me a ticket for “attempting to race”.

I failed the situational awareness test that night

In '72 I was carrying out groceries & heard some 4 barrels open up. Looked up & a GTO & a cop were side by side on Grandview. Couldnt tell who won, but there were no tickets that day. I know who was driving the GTO, one of the seniors at permian had that car.

man i wish i had awesome stories like that! 2day's cars are so lame compared to the beasts u guys drove! and for the record, i'd love a gremlin and i'd give my left one for a goat!

i figured u guys would understand, i admit it's stupid but i was "controlled stupid" like u said! it won't happen again(i can't afford it to!) and next time the other dude gets the "rev and coast"! lol

One night(I was in my 20's) I was off work....got bored about 2am....had a Mustang-(351 Cleveland)-decided to go for a ride.

Pulled up to the 4lane hwy....thought I'm going to race the next car that comes along.

Well, saw the car coming waited til it got fairly close ....I took off,I'm very good at speed shifting, was ahead...they caught up, with me flying....and....I thought,YES,a race!  But...

It was a Police Car...LOL.

Of course the blue light came on.I pulled over. The policeman said...
"Mam,were you trying to race me?"
I said "UM,yeah,I was,....sorry,I was bored"
He smiled and said"I think maybe you should go home"
I said "Yep,guess so".
I didnt get a ticket ;)

(I think if life was fair you'd get to be in your 20's twice ;)

With police I just find it always best to be honest. They are much more impressed. Otherwise they're not impressed at all ;)

I think sometimes they let you off just for being honest :)
Then again people tell me I have a innocent looking face  :-/

Maybe youre right...just dont drag race ever ;D

Oh the 70's. How I loved it (still live it). 340 'Cuda, Blue and white. A real sleeper. The only car I "loved". I was a teenager. Gas and insurance ate me up. Had to sell it. Cry!!!

i almost cry when i hear the love stories from back then...my uncle had a '69 shelby...traded her for a '73 mach 1 i believe then sold it for a caddy....what an idiot!

OH! btw i think the ticket did me good, i'm much more easy on the throttle now, and alot less compelled to go fast. kinda like when i laid her down, i guess i have to learn things the hard way!!

I did race on a motorcycle one time, but it wasnt my fault!!

LOL...I was a passenger and had no idea the race was going to happen ;D Too late then, the motorcycles were wound out as fast as they could go. I was a little afraid at first then I thought might as well go with it,there was nothing I could do anyway...I couldnt jump off ;)

BTW Wasnt there a Shelby Boss and a Shelby GT? There is a guy I know that has a 68 or 69 Shelby(I think Boss) that bought it new! and still has it :o

I loveeeeeeeeee the Mustangs!

I think all the "Boss" Fords had a specially set up 302 CID engine.
Ill bet theres some old gear head around here who can verify or vilify that.

i'm almost positive there were only shelby's and the boss is different. shelby was like a non inhouse performance mod like roush or saleen is today as shelby is pretty close with ford. that's how i have it, but then again i was born in '88 so please correct me if i'm wrong!

and i know the super cobra jets were the engine 429 or 426 depending on the year!

and i did learn, u are 100% correct! i just wish this lesson didn't cost me almost 300 bucks!!  :o

Pretty close Rocco... The "Shelby" name was used both "in-house" by the Ford family on some Mustangs and even the GT race machines which won Le-Mans. He (Mr. Carrol Shelby) also used his own name outside of Ford for cars and parts at different points in history.

As someone mentioned, the "Boss" was usually associated with a 302 C.I. aptly named the "Boss 302." However, and now as a primarily GM person, I could be wrong, but there may have been a "Boss 351 C.I."

I'm pretty sure the biggest engines from Ford came in 427; 428; and 429. All very much different besides the one cubic inch of displacement. But no 426 C.I. was associated with Ford, as I recall, the Mopar line of Hemi engines were famous for that one. They (Hemi) were so much of an advantage they were eventually banned by NASCAR.

Also they are the cylinder type upon which our little LS650 combustion chamber resembles; except with two domes and a pair of valves for each cylinder dome! (Makes you wonder why it isn't a two spark plug design...

Didn't someone around here do a two plug conversion? Lancer? Was it done by modifying a LS650 cylinder head? And when will details be available?

If it was $10 bucks, you probably wouldn't have learned....
I know I wouldn't!.... ;D

BTW,... the lesson is,...
Never get caught....  ;)

Title: Re: don't drag race....EVER!
Post by Rocco on 07/24/09 at 10:23:21

if it was ten bucks, i'd give the officer the money then tear through the gears right in front of him!

and yes, not getting caught was the 2nd lesson!!

I got a $150 dollar lesson 2006, .... it lasted about a year...  ;D

I was driving my Metro...
Who knew it could the speed limit?....

Drag race... no.

street race... sometimes.

I raced someone in a sporty merc a while back. sadly he had me in the straightaway, but once we reached the turns.... dusted.

good thing about the curvy races is that cops can't hide all that much...

thank u Rockin_John for the info! i get all my info from cool stories and magazines as these cars are only show cruisers now! such a shame huh?

and i don't doubt u could get in trouble in a metro. i had a '94 four door automatic nissan sentra with the smaller engine but somehow i could chirp and squeal the tires @ will! everyone thought i was nuts!

then my dad had a dodge dakota(4.7l v8) with a frame on the back that made the rear sit nice, and i actually pulled several steve mcqueen's by burning out in reverse lol

we guys don't mature, we just get tired of paying the fines hahaa

I remember Ford had a 490 V8. My dad had it in his Park Lane. Great big comfortable boat of a car that hauled a$$. I don't think they put it in the sports cars, but I'm sure there wre some clever dudes back then  that would have tried. This is back when cars were CARS!!!

The big Ford engine was 460, not 490  ;)

I can relate to the original posters story. I once did a nice smoky burnout in front of what seemed the whole Falls Church, VA PD one night in my 1968 Z28. It cost me ;D Back then it was called "reckless driving".

You are probably right Dyna Bob. It's been a long time since I thought of those cars. Brings to mine the saying; "There is no substitute for horsepower"

Title: Re: don't drag race....EVER!
Post by Rocco on 07/25/09 at 21:00:27

although torque is a close second! lol i love how torquey the thumper is!

my co-worker who has the candy orange shadow 750(who claims his bike weighs 850pounds...yeah right!) said y would i be racing on this bike since he had an 05 s40....i said because she's all torque! u can't go fast for long in south florida but my 0-60 is better!

someone asked him who's bike is faster "he'll get me off the line and his is louder" was his reply

i'll take that!!! ;D

Now if you want torque, the Buick 455 is pretty well known for being a torquey beast.

I ride both and I'd bet on your s40 (If it's jetted, etc.). I've ridden mine with lots of larger cruisers and I've never failed to keep up. I think the important things here are torque and power-to-weight ratio. The Honda's heavy ( 550 lbs, not 850 lbs ;) ) and doesn't have an abundance of horsepower. It's a great cruiser but not a dragster. The Suzuki's like a big minibike on steroids :) It's 200 lbs. lighter than the Honda.

i can't imagine y they call u "dyno bob" lol

the old gs buicks are sick! i don't see many of them around though

i looked up and saw the shadow weighs 550 like u said but he denied it! i can't have a heavy bike, i lock mine in the backyard and have to push it through grass. i can't ride because it's usually 2am and the neighbors would kill me outside their window!

i don't want to go much faster then the savage can, i just like getting there fast lol hence y i love torque!

and i was riding 2day in the rain, and passed into the sunlight. it was so warm and perfect i was in heaven! someone beeped @ me and gave me the thumbs up! better then the finger i'm sure! haha

I don't race on my s40 but I did get behind a mid 90's M3 at a red light, he was revin his engine and holding it to get as much boost as possible, when the light turned green he took off and me being me I decided to see if I could stick with him and I did until the speed limit then I let off. On another note I do "race" in my 2001 volvo V70 turbo (roughly 10lbs of boost) and everyone is suprised that my big ass wagon can keep up with just about anything, and for being fwd that I can drift about as well as most 240sx driver.

Yes, no substitute for cubic inches is a fact.

Of the ford engines talked of nothing can compare to the street able sort of  427 side oiler – the boss 429 was pretty special with machined circles around the pistons for brass ring cylinder gaskets but the 427cid was the thing – ford lost close to $1000 per engine to just put the things in street cars so they could meet requirement for racing.

My old daddy was stuck with the engineering “quality control” of the Galaxy 427’s single and dual carb out of the Dallas assemble plant  – all he could say was they wouldn’t idle for crap but he believed they’d climb a tree.

Title: Re: don't drag race....EVER!
Post by Rocco on 07/28/09 at 09:37:32

ahahaahha yeah volvos are quick ! i didn't think anything of them til i borrowed my body's 4 door volvo something.....i peeled out on accident! lol

and the 427 sounds ridiculous! and if they couldn't climb a tree they could surely rip it out and drag it down the street! lol

i wish racing was still like that...now everyone is in the lead lap and the cars they "use" look nothing like the street versions and most are not rear wheel drive!!

i shoulda been born in the 70's!!

Ah yes the good ole days, a powder blue 69 Nova with a 307 bored 30 over.  Wouldn't even squeak a tire in first gear, just sat down on the rails and took off.  Every time I hit second gear without letting of the gas a little it would break traction and lay rubber like there's no tomorrow.  Never lost a 1/4 mile race with that one.

Haven't even thought about doing that with the Savage, as much as I weigh it tops out at 92  :(
